BHAVISHYA PURAN II

There are many ways explained in our scriptures to cleansing of ones self and for achievement of various material goals in life. One of them is VRAT or FASTINGS. The subject is dealt at quite a length in Bhavishya Puran which is being reproduced here in short. Hope all will like it and benefit from it. It is a long informative article, hence will take some time to get completely  typed out. So kindly bear with me for posting it in parts from time to time.

It has been advised by Sumantu Manu to King Shatneek in the above scripture as to what to do during various tithis. According to him ,

On Pratipada, first day of moon one should have food WITHOUT MILK.
On Dwitya, second day of moon one should take food WITHOUT SALT.
On Tritya, third day of moon one should TAKE food made of SESAME seeds ONLY.
On Chaturthi,fourth day of moon one should TAKE ONLY MILK.
On Panchami, fifth day of moon one should TAKE ONLY FRUITS.
On Shashthi, sixth day of moon one should TAKE ONLY SHAK.
On Saptami, seventh day of moon one should TAKE ONLY BILVA FRUIT.
On Ashtami, eighth day of moon one should TAKE ONLY PISHT.
On Navmi, ninth day of moon one should TAKE ONLY ANNAGNIPAK.
On Dashmi and Ekadashi, tenth and eleventh day of moon one should TAKE ONLY GHRITAHAAR.
On Dwadashi, twelfth day of moon one should TAKE ONLY KHEER (PAYAS), made out of mixture of milk and rice.
On Tryodashi, thirteenth day of moon one should TAKE ONLY GAUMOOTRA (cows urine).
On Chaturdashi, fourteenth day of moon one should TAKE ONLY YAVANN (khiliyan, made out of rice).
On Poornima ( full moon night), fifteenth day of moon one should TAKE ONLY WATER OF KUSHA, a kind of grass which is very auspicious.
On Amavasya (no moon night), moonless day one should TAKE ONLY HAVISHYANN.
One who eats like this throughout a paksh (15 days) gets fruits of doing ten Ashwamedha yajnas and enjoys staying in heavens for one manvantar (life span of one manu) in heavens.

If followed for 3-4 months, then one enjoys fruit of 100 Ashwamedha yajnas and enjoys in heavens for many manvantars.

If followed for 8 months, then one enjoys fruit of thousands of Ashwamedha yajnas and stays in heaven for fourteen mantvantras.

If followed for one year, resides in the realm of Sun for many manvantars.

People belonging to all castes can do this whether men or women. One who starts from Ashwin-Navami  or Magh-Saptmi or Vaishakh-Tritiya or Kartik-Poornima enjoys long life and in the ends goes to the realm of Sun.

PRATHMA FASTINGS:

On Chaturdahsi prior to Prathma, during food take a samkalp of fasting. And on Amavasya take trikaal snan (three times bath). Do not eat food and perform japa of Gayatri mantra.

On pratipada, at sunrise do poojan of brahmin with gandh, garland etc. Offer them milk to drink saying that "Brahma should get pleased with me". After that one should also drink cow's milk. Perform this way for one year and at the end do poojan of Brahma with Gayatri. This will remove the effect of all the bad deeds performed and is a process of Atma shudhi. It is said such a sadhak after death boards a dev vimaan and with divine body enjoys in the realm of devatas. In Satyug, again comes back to earth for ten lives and is born as a person with great knowledge, plenty of wealth, long life, disease free, having many material comforts, performs many yajnas and is a great giver of offerings to brahmins.

It is said sage Vishwamitr also could become a Brahmin because of this vrat only. By doing this one gets free of all sins and in the next life is born as a brahmin though he may be of any caste in the earlier birth. On this day Brahmaji poojan should be done especially.

One who gets constructed a Brahma's temple, establishes Brahmaji's statue in it with pran pratishtha, he gets multi fold fruits for his yajna, tapa, teerth and daan. One who does all this, just by seeing such a person or by his touch alone 21 generations gets evolved to higher levels.

One who cleanse Brahmas temple with a broom taking care of all the small jeevas, smears it with special materials, he resides in the realm of Brahma for many many years. After that he acquires all the good qualities, gets knowlede of the Vedas, becomes a Brahmin king.
One who gets a Brahma temple repaired he gets eternal freedom.

If one performs arti of Brahma with Shankh, Ghanta, Bheri etc.then he resides in the Brhma lok for that many thousands of year as to the number of times he has performed the above arti in the temple.

If one bathes Brahma statue in his temple with Kapila cows milk then millions of his sins are forgiven.

Many different things can be used for bathing of Brahma for relalising various desires as detailed below:

To bath with milk on Pratipada, 21 generations evolved.
Brahmins having knowledge of Vedas and then one goes to Brahma loka in a golden plane.
To bath with CURD one goes to the realm of Vishnu.
To bath with CANE JUICE one goes to the realm of Sun.
To bath with PURE WATER all sins are removed and one resides in the realm of Brahma.
To bath in WATER SIFTED through a CLOTH then one is always satiated and whole world is under his command.
To bath with different AUSHADHIS one goes to realm of Brahma.
To bath with CHANDAN one goes to realm of Rudra.
To bath with FRAGRANT FLOWERS like Lotus, Neel kamal, Patala and Kaner one gets praised in realm of Brahma.
To bath with water of KARPOOR and AGAR afthenter charging the water with 100 gayatri mantras one goes to the realm of Brahma.
To bath with fresh WATER and MILK of Kapila cow and then with GHEE one gets cleansed of all the sins.
To bath all the THREE times and do his poojan with bhakti one gets the fruit of Ashwamedha yajna.

Further, usage of particular pot to be used for bathing of Brahma has also been explained. It is said that one may bath the Lord with earthen pot. But Copper pot is 100 times better than earthen pot; Silver pot is 100,000 better than Copper pot; Golden pot is 10,000,000 more powerful than the silver pot.

Brahma's touch is better than his Darshan, Poojan is better than touch, bath with ghee is better than poojan as it removes all the sins of speech and mind. On should take out a rath yatra of Brahma on Kartik Shukla Pratipada.

      Tilak Vratt: On the pratipada of Shukla Paksh of Chaitra month, men and women should take bath, perform dev and pitr tarpan, make a statue of Samvatsar with wheat flour, perform its poojan with chandan, flowers, dhoop, deep and naivedya. Chanting the names of all the months and seasons offer prayers to the Samvatsar. Offer clothes, fruits, garlands, laddus and say “Oh lord my may my whole year pass comfortably.” After this offer dakshina to Brahmins and from that very day start wearing chandan tilak on the forehead daily. On seeing this tilak all bhoot, prêt, pishach, Dakini and enemies will run away.

     Ashok Vratt: On the pratipada of Ashwin month, Shukla paksh perform poojan of Ashok tree adorned with beautiful leafs with Dhoop, deep, Saptdhanya(satnaja), fragrance, flowers, fruits, Coconut, Laddu and Pomegranate. Offer arghya to it chanting following mantra,
      
       Pitrimatripatisch Shrushvashuranam Tathaiv Cha, Ashok Shok Shamno Bhav,Sarvatr Na Kule
          
    Meaning that O, Ashok tree you please remove all the pains and anguish of my parents and in-laws and husband.
      Cover it with a cloth and adorn it with different flags.

DWITIYA:

Chayavan Rishi was quite old. He asked a king to give his daughter to her. So the princess was married off to Chayavan Rishi. When he would sit in his sadhana and dhyan she would look after his needs. Once when he was sitting in his Samadhi, she went to take bath to a river. There Ashwini kumars saw her and wanted her to marry either of them. She refused and told them that she is already married to Chyavan Rishi. But if they are happy with her they should grant youth to her husband. they agreed to give her husband a form like their own but against one condition. That after changing his body she would have to find her husband out of three of them. Whomsoever she would locate would be her husband. She said that she can not take this decision and would have to ask her husband first. They agreed to it. So she went to her husband and discussed the matter with him. He agreed to it. So Ashwinikumars took her husband along with them and went inside the river and came out. Lo all three of them were glowing and had exactly same form. It became very difficult for the princess to make sure who her husband was. She was at her wits ends. Then she realized that two the three men standing in front of her were not blinking their eyes and were standing a little above ground while the third being human was blinking his eyes as well as standing on ground. Thus she was able to locate her husband. Her husband got very happy. He felt indebted to Ashwini kumars and asked them what he good in return could be done for them. They requested him to make them part takers of Yajna. To this request he agreed and asked the king to arrange a yajna for this. During the Yajna he invited all the divine beings along with Indra, king of the divines to come to take their part of yajna offerings. When Indra saw Ashwini kumars being given yajna part he became furious and raised his vajra to strike and spoil the yajna. At that moment Chyavan rishi due to the power of his sadhana or tapasya froze Indra in that very hand raised position. Indra could do nothing. Then on mediation of others, both the parties agreed to amicable settlement. Indra was restored to his early form and Ashwini kumars were allowed to take part of Yajna offering in future. It was a dwitiya tithi.
This vratta is started on the Kartik month’s dwitiya. Whole year one should with steadfastness should have food of flowers. Whatever best flowers or Havishya is available during particular month should alone be taken. Afterwards in the end one should make flowers out of gold or silver and offer to the Brahmin to finish this vratta. By doing this Ashwini kumars get pleased and offer best form to a sadhak. At the end of it, one goes to heavens in a plane and enjoys the comforts there for a period of one kalp and later on is born on earth in a Brahmin lineage and is a knower of many Vedas, mahadani, disease free, having full family, beautiful wife and becomes king.

Ashoonyashayan Vratta: This vratta is done at the time when Lord Vishnu lies with Mother Luxmi in the Ksheer sagar. This time is during the month of Shravan, Krishan paksh dwitiya tithi. At that moment one should perform poojan of mother Luxmi along with Lord Vishnu who is decorated with a sign of Srivatsa on his great chest and with folded hands one should request him thus,

 “Oh Lord, My family should never be annihilated, no pains should be faced by my family, women of the house old should not face any problems ever, their should never be any difference of opinion between both me and my wife,  I should never be without Luxmi ever, I should never be separated from my wife, as your bed is never without Goddess Luxmi same way my bed should also be never without my wife, without Luxmi .”

Then offer fruits to him on his bed. At night one should eat same fruits and in the morning offer alms to Brahmin. Offer dates, coconut, Bijora and ripe seasonal fruits. Offer similar fruits to Brahmin also along with gold and clothes. One who does this for three years his family life is sustained for three life spans. If a woman performs this she can not become a widow in her three life spans i.e. she would never be separated from her husband she would always be born with good destiny (bhagya).

TRITIYA:

Importance of this date was explained by Mother Gauri to Yama, lord of death. Actually Gauri was born on this date and her marriage also took place, on this date only, hence this date was given to her (As per Vrah Puran).

According to it, establish a statue of Gauri and perform poojan with full devotion. Offer different eatables, and at night eat food without salt and sleep in front of the statue. Next day offer food and dakshina to brahmins.
Any women who does like this gets perfect husband, enjoys great bhog and at the end achieves same realm as her husband. Thus she is never separated from him. If she is a widow already then she stays for a long time with her husband in heavens.

Indra’s wife,  Rishi Vashishtha’s wife Arundhati, Chandrama’s wife Rohini all performed this vratta by the dint of which they were never separated from their husbands.
This tithi is especially good in the month of Vaishakh, Magh and Bhadrapad though in other months also its beneficial.

Magh Tritiya: Propitiate Lord Shankar and give  modak(laddu) and water, Jaggery and salt to others. Both men and women can do it.

Bhadrapad Tritiya: On this day give daan  or make offerings of maal pua made in jaggery.
Vaishakh: Offer chandan water and modak(laddu) to Lord Brahma. All divinities get happy by this. Offer grains, clothes, food/eatables/gold and water to others. As a result of it one gets unlimited fruits and in the end one goes to the realm of Sun.

Panchagni sadhan Rambha Tritiya: This is meant for the women to get good husband and married life. It falls on the tritiya of Jyestha month, Shukla paksh. Four fire in the form of Garhpatya, Dakshinayan, Ahwahniya and Sabhyagni were were lighted all around oneself and fifth agni in the form of Sun shone from the top on to the sadhak. Sadhak would sit facing East and meditate on Mahasati sitting on Mrigcharm with jata, valkal, adorned with various ornaments on a lotus. She is present in the form of Mahalakshami, Mahakali, Mahamaya, Ganga, Yamuna, Sindhu, Narmada, Satluj, Mahi, Saraswati and Vaitarni rivers.

Make a beautiful mandap and adorn it with garlands and light various kinds of dhoop and gandh. Establish a golden statue of Mahadevi Rudrani inside it as per ones capacity. Do its pooja with dhoop, deep, flowers and naivedya. Offer Jeera, Kaduhund, Apoop, Sem, Salt, Sugar, Jaggery. Sit in Padamasan in front of Devi till sunset. Prostrate in front of the devi with following prayer,

Vedeshu Sarvshastreshu Divi Bhumau Dharatale,
Drishtah Shrutashch Bahusho Na Shaktaya Rahitah Shiva,
Tvam Shaktistvamswadhasvaha Tvam Savitri Sarawati,
Patim Dehi Griham Dehi Vasu Dehi Namoastu te.

Later do poojan of a Brahmin couple and offer daan to them.  One should pray to the devi for cleansing all the sins. Later next day on Chaturthi offer food to Brahmin couples and thus complete this vratt.
Goshpad Tritiya Vratt:

It is observed during the month of Bhadrpad, Shukla paksh, tritya and Chaturthi every year. Both men and women after taking morning bath perform poojan of cows with dhoop, deep, chandan, flowers etc. Beautify their horns and give them good food. One should eat only that food which is free of salt and oil etc and not cooked on fire.

One should offer grass to all those cows which are going to or coming back from the jungle. Offer them arghya with following mantra.

Mata RudranamduhitaVasunam Svasadityanaam mritasyanabhi,
Pra Nu Vocham Chikiteshu Janaya Ma Gamnagam Ditim Vadhisht.
Pray to her following mantra,
Gavo Me Agrata Santu, Gavo Me Santu Prishthata,
Gavo Me Hridaye Santu, Gavan Madhye Vasamyaham.

On Panchmai without any anger eat food of cows milk, curd, rice peetha, fruits and shaak. Controlling senses , rest during the night. Then make a golden govardhan hill with gaukhur and jaggery. Do its poojan. In the end give it in daan to a Brahmin saying “Govindah Priyantaam”.

By the power of this vrat Gauri got Shiva, Lopamudra also got Agastaya as her husband and was respected through out this world.  One gets beautiful body, wealth, respect, good progeny, grains and after death one goes to heavens and stays there for a period of 100 celestial years. And then goes to Vishnulok. There he does Vishnu poojan and eats goras in the great gaulok.

Harkali Vratt : Daksprajapati had sixty daughters and out of them one was called Kali, her skin colour was also very dark. He gave that daughter to Shankar. She lived happily with him. One day lord Shankar were sitting with lord Vishnu and he called Kali saying, “ O dear Gauri, Please come here.” Kali felt offended by it and started crying as she thought Shankar ji has intentionally called her Gauri though she is dark. She thought of burning her body to which Lord Shiva asked her no to do same. Despite that  she left the dark greenish tinged in the green durva fire and thus offered her body in havan in the pyre. In her next life she appeared as Gauri and married Shankar again. Because of this day she was named as Harkaali.

On Bhadrapad, shukla paksh, tritiya this vratt is observed. On this day new fresh grain is collected and at the top of it a statue in green fresh sprouted grass of Harkali is made. Then its poojan is done with Gandh, Dhoop, deep, modak and naivedya etc. At night one stays awake and singing, musical instruments are played and one dances in front of the Harkali. One prostrates in front of her with following mantra,

“Harkarmsamuttpanne, Harkaye Harpriye, Maa Trahishasya Murtisthe Pranantoasmi Namoh Namah.”  O beloved of Shankar, You who were born by the kritya or doing of Shankar, who resides in his body, you always stay in the form of Shiva, I am under your protection, please take care of me. I bow repeatedly to you.

After doing her poojan, in the morning suvasin ladies should take her statue singing and dancing to a sacred river and put it inside it with following mantra,

Archtasi Maya Bhaktya Gach Devi Suralayam, Harkale Shive Gauri Punaragamnaya Ch.

O Harkali Devi, I have done your pooja with bhakti. To come again here, please now depart to your realm. Like this men and women should do it every year. One who performs like this every year disease free body, long life of hundred years, wealth, grains, good fortune, power are granted. After that one goes to the realm of Shiva. By the grace of Mahadev, all his ganas, Verbhadra, Nandishwar, Mahakaal, Vinayak all seek his commands. A woman who does this vratt and at night sings, dances and plays music to Harkaali becomes dear to her husband.

Lalita Tritiya Vratt: One day Devi Parvati asked Lord Shiva to explain the benefits of Tritiya vratt to her. Shankar asked her as to why she is asking it though she has everything in the world she needed. On saying that she wanted to know it for the sake of all the women on earth who desire different things. On hearing this Shiva explained the tritiya vrat as below.

It is observed on Magh Shukla tritiya tithi. Women should get up in the early morning and do her daily things. Then at madhyan bath in the water mixed with bilv and amla. Then wear fresh clothes and perform poojan of motherly Pravati with dhoop, deep, gandh, flowers, karpoor, Kumkum etc and offer different naivadyas to her. Then meditating on you she should prepare a pot of copper fill it up with water, akshat and gold and offer it to a Brahmin in daan. Brahmin should perform her Abhishek with that water. Then drinking Kushodak she should go to sleep on a kusha bed meditating on Parvati. In the morning after getting up and bathing, she should perform poojan of Parvati and offer food to Brahmins as per ones capacity. After that one should eat food in silence.

During the first month meditate on her with name Ishani; next month meditate on her with name Parvati; next month meditate on her with name Shankarpriya; next month meditate on her with name Bhawani; next month meditate on her with name Skandmata; next month meditate on her with name Dakshduhita; next month meditate on her with name Min; next month meditate on her with name Katyayini; next month meditate on her with name Himadrija; next month meditate on her with name Saubhagyadayini; next month meditate on her with name Uma; next month meditate on her with name Gauri.

In the twelve months use Kushodak, Milk, Ghrit, Gaumootr, Gomaya, Fruits, Neemb patra, Kantkaari, Gaushringodak ( water from the horns of a cow), curd, Panchgavya and Shaak for prashan. Perform poojan of Bhagwati for all the twelve months and offer food to Brahmins each time. After twelve months on completion of  the vrat call a Brahmin who is a knower of veda along with his wife and perform their poojan as Shiva and Parvati with gandh, pushpa etc and offer them food with full devotion. Offer two white clothes to Brahmin and two red clothes to her wife along with ornaments, grains and dakshina etc. One who does this will enjoy all bhogas for thousands of years, will go to a divine realm with her husband for tens of thousands of years, and when she will return to earth she will get same atma born as her husband. They will be having all comforts and her husband will be under her command, later both will be born as king and queen and enjoy their kingdom.

 Rambha Tritiya Vratt: This vratt is observed for full one year and next day its paran is done. It is started from Marghshirsh Shukla paksh tritiya. Get up in  the morning and braush ones teeth an dpray to devi as follows:

Devi Samvatsaram Yavatritiyayamuposhita, Pratimasam Karishyami Paranam Chaparehani, Tadvighnen Me Yatu Prasadat tav Parvati. O Devi, I will follow this vratt for full one year and next day perform the parana. Please provide such a gracae that it is observed without any problem. Taking a vow like this one should take abath in a river or a pond or at house and then perform devi poojan. At night drink Kushodak. Next give food to knowledgeable Brahmins, offer dakshina in the form of gold and salt. Offer bhog to Shiva.

During the month of Paush, vratt is same but for prashan use Gaumootr while in dakshina instead of salt give Jeerak. One gets the fruit of Vaajpaye and Atiratra yazna.

During the month of Magh, vratt is same, poojan of Devi is done with thename of SUDEVI but for prashan use Gaumaya while in dakshina instead of salt give Saffron (Kesar). After residing in Vushnulok for a long time one gets Sayujya moksha with Lord Shankar.

During the month of Phalgun, vratt is same, poojan of devi is done with name GAURI but for prashan use while in dakshina instead of salt give Kaduhund. Fruit of this vratt is also equal to Vajpaye and Atiratra yajna.

During the month of Chaitra, vratt is same, poojan of the devi is done with name VISHALAKSHI but for prashan use curd while in dakshina instead of salt give Kumkum. This vrat gives great fortunes.

During the month of Chaitra, vratt is same, poojan of the devi is done with name VISHALAKSHI but for prashan use curd while in dakshina instead of salt give Kumkum. This vrat gives great fortunes.

During the month of Chaitra, vratt is same, poojan of the devi is done with name VISHALAKSHI but for prashan use curd while in dakshina instead of salt give Kumkum. This vrat gives great fortunes.

During the month of Vishakh, vratt is same, poojan of the devi is done with name SHRIMUKHI but for prashan use ghee, sleep alone, while in dakshina give salt and Tambul (paan). This vrat gives beautiful male progenies.

During the month of Ashadh, vratt is same, poojan of the devi is done with name MADHAVI but for prashan use

Tilodak while in dakshina instead of salt give Jaggery. This vrat gives shubh realm after death.

During the month of Shravan, vratt is same, poojan of the devi is done with name SHREEDEVI but for prashan use Gaushringodak while in dakshina instead of salt give fruit to Shiv bhaktas. This vrat makes the vrat observer sarvlokeshwar and fulfill all desires.

During the month of Bhadrapad, vratt is same, poojan of the devi is done with name HARTALI but for prashan use Mahishi milk. This vrat grants great incomparable fortunes and in the end one goes to realm of Shiva.

During the month of Ashwin, vratt is same, poojan of the devi is done with name GIRIPUTRI but for prashan use Tandul mixed water while in dakshina instead of salt give Chandan. This vrat gives fruit of all the yajnas and one goes to the realm of Gauri.

During the month of Kartik, vratt is same, poojan of the devi is done with name PADMODBHAWA but for prashan use Panchgavya, offer food to Brahmin couples an offer clothes, garlands and ornaments to them. Also perform Kumari bhijan.

At the year end do Udyapan of the vratt. Make a glod statue of Gauri and Shankar, do their proper shringaar, perform their poojan with fragrant things, leaf, flowers, fruits, cooked naivedya, Deepmala, Sharkara, Kusumbh, Kumkum, Beejpurak, Jeerak, Dadim, Salt, Laddu etc in a cooper plate. Perform arti and ask for [pardon for any tings done wrongly or forgotten during the whole process.

Chaitra, Bhadrpad, Magh Shukla Tritiya Vratt: Bhawati Parvati has two sakhis by the name of Jaya and Vijaya. One day dev daughters asked them how to please Gauri. On asking this Jaya told them the procedure for observing this vratt which is explained below.

One should get up early morning on Chaitra, Shukla palksh Tritiya and perform brushing of teeth an dother daily things. Then make samkalpm for this vratt. Then putting various signs with kumkum, Sindoor, red clothes, tambool etc prepare for poojan of devi. Prepare one mandap for her poojan. Also build one havan kund which is one hand long in dimension. Then taking bath and wearing good clothes do poojan of Devtas and Pitras. In the devi mandap perform her poojan with eight names, Parvati, Lalita, Gauri, Gandhari, Shankari, Shiva, Uma and Sati. Anoint with Kumkum, Karpoor, Agar, Chandan. Offer many different kinds of fragrent flowers, dhoop, deep etc and also ghee naivadya, jeerak, kumkum, salt, sugar cane, sugar cane juice, turmeric, coconut, amla, anaar, kooshmand, karkati, narangi, kathal, bijaura nimbu/lemon, and other seasonal fruits. A family person should also offer beautified Okhli, sil, sopo and tokri to Bhagwati. With music of conch, mridang, toorya etc sing best songs for devi. Doig thus bath her in the water brought by kmari kanyas in kalashas. Again do her poojan. Her poojan should be done in every prahar and havan should also be performed every prahar. At night sit in padmasna in front of the devi and meditate on her. Shanks gets pleased by Dancing, Parvati by singing and devtas by bhakti.Offer Tambul, Kumkum and flowers to suvsini ladies.

In the morning again after bath perform her poojan and do tula daan with jaggery, salt, kumkum, kapoor, agar, chandan and seek her pardon. Offer food to Brahmins and suvasini ladies. Distribute naivedya. This will fulfill all desires.

During Bhadrpad, Shukla paksh tritiya make a statue of devi with saptdhanya in soop ( an implement to cleanse grains),  and do poojan.. Prashan for this month should be with gaumootr.

Similarly during the month of Magh, Shukla paksh tritiya do everything as earlier , perform tula daan with kund flowers and Ganesh poojan on Chaturthi.

A woman who does like this resides in Indra’s realm along with her huband, then goes to Brahma’s realm and then to Shiva’s realm. When she comes back to this earth realm she gets beautiful body, good fortune, good progeny, wealth. In her family no one is born with bad fortune. Poverty, disease etc never occurs in that house. A girl who performs this vratt and does poojan of Brahmin shw gets desired fruit.

Akshay Tritiya:

Sri Krishna explained to Yudhishter that snan, daan, jap, hom, swadhayay, tarpan done on this day remains etrnal and Akshat offered on this day to lord Vishnu pleases him very much. Satyug also started from this tithi only.

In the city of Shakal a truthful, devtaa and Brahmin poojan business man lived. One day during katha he heard if on akshya tritya, when Wednesday is there and rohini nakshatra is also up then what ever daan is done it becomes eternal. So he thought of it and on the day statrted giving daanagainst the wishes of his wife. After some time he left his body. In his next life he was born in Dwarika and became a king. Because of this daan his wealth never reduced and he did many big yajnas. He used to distribute to to the poor, give dakshina to Brahmins. This all happened because he gave  daan on akshay tritya.

Do tarpan of pitras with ganga water, offer juices, honey, water filled jars, different seasonal fruits, shoes, things fit for summers, grains, cow, land, gold etc. to the Brahmins. Karma performed on this never dies.  

CHATURTHI:

Once lord Kartikeya was writing a great scripture which explained the physical characters of men and from there how to make predictions about them. He completed the male part and was going to write female part when lord Ganesha arrived their and he was forced to stop his writing. Due to this he got enraged and broke one tooth of lord Ganesh his own brother.

When Lord Shiva came to know of all this, he pacified both of them and asked Kartikeya to return the broken tooth back and restore it to Ganesha again. To this Kartkeya disagreed and told that Ganesha will have to carry it always with him and thus returned the tooth. Lord Shiva jokingly asked Kartikeya to tell from his scripture what symptoms of males are their in him(Shiva). To this Kartikeya replied that in future times to come he would be called Kapali. On hearing this lord Shiva got furious and threw the scripture in to the ocean. Ocean god came out and asked Lord Shiva as what to do with the scripture put in to his waters. Lord Shankara asked him to write the feminine part of scripture. To this ocean replied that he will write only if the whole shastra or scripture will be know by his name. To this the lord agreed and the scripture today is called Samudrik Shastra.

It is said during the period of Satyug, no obstruction exist. Every work is done very easily. Hence all the people of that time developed great ego. On seeing this Brahma thought of Vinayak and asked lord Shiva to produce it. Shiva appointed Ganesh as the head of all of his ganas.  It was told at that time for any pooja to be successful from now on would require Ganesh /Vinayak poojan first. Thus from that time onwards when ever any poojan is done, we always do Ganesh poojan at the start. Ganesh was born on this tithi and his abhishek was also performed on this very tithi. So chaturthi tithi was given to Ganesh.

Out of all the chaturthis, the one which falls during Shukla paksha, on a Thursday and during Pushya nakshatra is the best for Ganesh poojan. On this day perform the poojan of Ganesh with sarvaushadhi, with all the fragrant materials available, in bhadrasan. Get swastivachan mantra chanted by the Brahmins. Also perform the poojan of Shankar, Gauri, Pitr (ancestors) and all the planets (grah) with four Kalash, Saptmritika, Guggle, Gorochan etc. and also put scented material in them. Put Ganesha on a pedestal and give him a bath chanting following mantra:

Sahasraksham Shatdharam Rishibhi Pawanam Kritam,
Tein Tvanabhishinchinim Paavmanyah Punantu Te,
Bhagam Te Varuno Raja Bhagam Suryo Brihaspatih,
Yate Kesheshu Daurbhagyam Simante Yacch Moordhani,
Lalate Karnyor Kshanorapastad Ghrantu Te Sada.

Offer three pushpanjali of Pushpa, durva and Sarshap (sarson) to mother Parvati with following prayer,

Roopam Dehi Yasho Dehi Bhagam Bhagwati Dehi Mein,
Putran Dehi Dhanam Dehi Sarvaan Kamanshch Dehi  Mein,
Achlaam Budhim Mein Dehi Dharayaam Khyatim Eiv Cha.

After this offer food to Guru ad Brahmins along with clothes and dakshina. This way one gets fruit for all the karmas and Luxmi, the goddess of wealth stays permanently with the sadhak. Do poojan and tilak of Vinayak, Kartikeyan and Sun.

Thus fasting on Chaturthi, next day offer sesame seeds to Brahmins and eat food made out of sesame seeds only. Repeat this whole procedure for two years in a row, as an effect of this great results will accrue in the form of wealth and one enjoys great deeds on moving to next realm. After enjoying there, one is born again on earth with beautiful body, great mind and intellect, every comfort, wife and children.Chaturthi of Bhadrapad, in shukla paksh is called Shiva. Any bath, daan, japa, fasting done on this day bears fruit one hundred fold more than other days. Offerings to others on this day should made of Jaggery, Salt, Ghee etc. Offer puas (made out of wheat flour and jaggery) to Brahmins after performing their poojan.

If any women on this day offers puas made out of jaggery and offer it to her in-laws along with salty things gets great blessings of lord Ganesha. Especially those who seek a husband should offer these things as above.
Magh month, Shukla, Chaturthi is called Shanata. It provides Nitya Shanti (peace always). Any good deeds done on this day are multiplied thousand fold. One should fast on this day and then perform havan, offer salt, jaggery and Shaak to Brahmins in daan. Women especially should offer everything to their in-laws. Thus all the obstructions will be removed.

Chaturthi, Shukla paksh on a Tuesday  of any month is called Sukh. Fast on this day and then perform Ganesh poojan with red chandan, red flowers. It guards all our body organs and grants saubhagya and hence is called Angarak.

One should take a samkalp first with earth in one hand while chanting the following mantra,

Eha Tvam Vandita Poorvam, Krishnenoudhavta  Kil,
Tasmaname Dah Paapmanam Yanmaya Poorsanchitam.

After it mix some water of Ganges in it and offer it in front of Sun. Standing in water smear it over your body and  chant

Tvamapoyonih Sarvesham Daitya Danav Duaoksaam,
Swedandajoudbhij Dadam Chaiv Rasnam Patya Namah.

After this take a dip in the water thinking that one is bathing in the waters any sacred river like Ganga etc. Come back home after cleaning and touch Durva, Shami, Peepal and a cow with following mantra,

Durva:

Tvam Durva Amritnamasi Sarvdevastu Vandita,
Vandita Dah Tatsarvam, Duritam Yanmaya Kritam.

Shami:

Pavitranam Pavitrtvam, Kashyapi Pratitha Shrutao,
Shami Shamyame Papam, Noonam Vetsi Dharadharam.

Peepal tree:

Netra Spandadijam Dukham, Duh Swapnam Durvishintanam,
Shaktanam Ch Samudyogam Ashwath Twam Kshmasvme.

Cow:

Sarvdevmayi Devi Munibhistu Suoopita,
Tasmaat Sprishami Vande Twam, Vandita Paapha Bhava.

Circumambulate the cow after touching it. Then after doing shudhi sit on your asan, light fire with the wood of Khair and perform havan with Ghee, Milk and Yav( kheel) with following mantras:

108 ahutis with Om! Sharvaye swaha, 108 ahutis with Om! Sharvputraye Swaha, 108 ahutis with Om!  Kshonyutsangbhavaye Swaha, 108 ahutis with Om! Kujaye Swaha, 108 ahutis with Om! Lalitaangaye Swaha, 108 ahutis with Om! Lohitangaye Swaha.

Make a statue out of gold or silver and place it in a tray. Do its poojan with red chandan, red flowers, kumkum and ghee chanting vedic mantras like

Agni Moordha Divah Kukutpatih Prithviya Ayam, Apa Reta Si Jinvati….3/12-Yajurveda.

After poojan give it to Brahmin. Also give Ghee, rice, milk and jaggery to Brahmin. Do it four times. Statue of Mangal or Ganpati should be made out of 10 – 5 tola (a weight measure) gold. Weight of the tray should be 20 pal or 10 tola made in gold or Silver or Copper. Every thing should be offered to the Brahmin in the end after poojan. Doing like this full benefit of the vratt is realized.

As an effect of this one becomes effulgent like moon, shining like Sun, powerful like Air, with the grace of Maha Ganpati lives in the realm of Mangal (mars). Biggest of the sins committed are removed by it.

PANCHAMI:

During the time of great ocean churning both Devtas and Rakshas used Sheshnaag as a rope and mount Meru as churning block. Many things came out of the ocean which were distributed amongst them. The whole story has already been explained in the earlier article.

It has also been told in Vrah puran that Marich who was the first manas putra of Brahma gave birth to 
Kashyap. Kashyap married Kradu and she gave birth to mahanaags. Slowly-2 they started increasing their population. Soon they were everywhere and were biting humans and killing them. Brhama saw it and cursed them that since you are biting humans without any cause, hence in the Swayambhu manvantar you will be cursed by your own mother and will get killed in great numbers. On hearing this they got scared and fell at the feet of Brahma and asked for a place to stay so that they do not inhabit same places as humans. Brahma gave them three realms to stay Sutal, Vital and Patal and asked them to stay till 7th  prahar there and then they can come out.

On this day a special festival is said to be celebrated in the realm of snakes. Brahma gave boon to the snakes on this very date and also Astik Brahmin saved them from the Janmejaya havan on this day, hence this tithi is very special to all the snakes.

One should offer prayer to the snakes as below:

“We bow down again and again to all the snakes living on earth, in space, in heavens, in the rays of the Sun, in the ponds, lakes and rivers and they should become pleased with us.”

On Bhadrapad, shukla, Panchami undertake fasting and perform naag poojan. On the chaturthi do ekbhukta fast i.e eat once a day while on panchami do complete fasting. Do this for all the chaturthis and panchamis for four months.  To do the poojan of snakes, draw them on the ground or make them out of mud, or wood or gold or silver. Then offer lotus, Kraveer, Chameli flowers with gandh, dhoop and different eatables on panchami. Offer ghee, kheer and laddus to five Brahmins. Do poojan of nags throughout the year by the names of Anant1, Vasuki2, Shankh3, Padm4, Kambal5, Karkotak6, Ashwatar7, Dhritrashtra8, Shankpaal9, Kaliya10, Takshak11 and Pingal12. Hence do this for one full year and at the end offer food to many Brahmins and a golden naag form be given to a learned Brahmin.

Doing like this one gets free of all the debts of the ancestors, fear of snakes is removed for ever and one goes to a higher realm after death.

Shanti Vratt: During the month of Kartik and shukla paksh, panchami tithi this vratt is observed. For this vratt one should abstain from eating sour things for one year. On this day peform Naktra vrat and do poojan of various body parts of lord lying on Shashnaag with following mantras,

Om! Anantaya Namah, Padau poojyami (both feet); Om! Dhritrashtrayeyi Namah, Katim poojyami (waist area); Om! Takshakaye Namah, Udram Poojayami (stomach area); Om! Karkotaye Namah, Uruh Poojyami (heart); Om! Padmaye Namah, Karnau poojayami ( both ears); Om! Mahapadmaye Namah, Dauyugam Poojayami (both arms); Om! Shakhpalaye Namah, Vakshah Poojayami (chest); Om! Kulikaye Namah, Shirah Poojayami (head).

Then in silence bath Lord Vishnu with milk and then perform havan with milk and sesame seeds. At the year end make a statue of Narayan and Shesha in gold, perform their poojan and offer it to Brahmins and also offer a cow along with a colt to her, a bronze metal plate full of kheer, two clothes and gold as per capacity. After that finish this vratt giving food tp Brahmins. One who performs this vratt always remains peaceful, never has any fear of nags/snakes.

Saraswati Vratt: At the start of Vatsar during the month of Chaitra, Shukla paksh, anchami tithi this vratt is observed. Just by kirtan matra of this vratt Saraswati gets pleased. On the particular day get swastivachan done by Brahmins, perform poojan of Gayatri devi who is adorned with gandh, white garland, white rice, white clothesVeena, /akshmala, /Kamandal and a book. She is wearing all the ornaments. Stand in front of her with folded ahnds offer her prayers as below:

“O Devi, As lok Pitamaha Brahma never separeates himself from you, same way please give a boon to us oo that you will never separate from our family also. O Devi, all the veda and scriptures, vidyas of singing and dancing, all depend upon you, please teach me all of them. O Saraswati Devi, you along with your eight forms of Luxmi, Medha, Vara, Rishti, Gauri, Tushti, Prabha and Mati, defen me always.”

Then have food in silence. On shukla paksh panchami of every month perform poojan of all suvasini females, give them sesame seeds, rice, ghee, milk and gold saying “Gayatri Priyataam”. Observe silence during evening. Follow it for one full year.

After completion of the vratt, offer a patr full of rice to Brahmins. Also give two white clothes, chandan and a cow with colt. Ghanta, Vitan and grains etc offered to devi should be given to Brahmins. Perform poojan of guru with flowers, clothes and grains. One who does like this with grace of the devi becomes a poet like Vedvyas, wealthy, his speech becomes excellent and gets knowledge of amny vidyas.

Shri Panchami Vratt: It is done for acquiring permanent wealth. Observed on panchami of shukla paksh of Marsgshirsh month. After getting up in the morning and doing teeth brushing, take samkalp of this vratt. Take bath. Wear two clothes and do poojan and tarpan of Devtas and pitras. At home make a sketch of Luxami sitting on an asan of lotus holding lotus in her hands wearing all kinds of ornaments, her eyes like lotus, four white elephants giving her bath with golden pots on Golden, Silver, Copper, Arkoot or wooden plank, perform her poojan with all kids of seasonal flowers with following mantras,

Om! Chaplayai Namah, Padau poojyami; Om! Chanchalayai Namah, Januni  Poojyami; Om! Kamal Vasinyai Namah, Katim Poojyami; Om! Khyatayai Namah, Nabhim Poojyami; Om! Manmath Vasinyai Namah, Stanau Poojyami; Om! Lalitayai Namah, Bhuj Dwayam Poojayami; Om! Utkanthitayai Namah, Kantham Poojyami; Om! Madhvyai Namah, Mukhmandalam Poojyami; Om! Shriyai Namah, Shirah Poojyami. Thus perform her poojan feo head to foot.Offer different sprouted grains and other naivedyas to her. Offer flowers and kumkum to Suvasini ladies. After doing their poojan. Offer them food and with folded hands let them exit. Offer one prasth ( saer) rice with ghrit patra to a Brahmin saying “Shrishah Sampriyataam”. Eat observing silence. Do it in evry month for twelve months and names of Luxmi to be sed for different months are Shri, Luxmi, Kamla, Sampat, Rama, Narayani, Padma, Dhriti, Sthiti, Pushti, Ridhi, Sidhi and always attach Priyataam at the end as told above.

During panchami of twelfth month make a beautiful mandap, in the middle of it make a bed and establish a statue of Luxmi with all the things. Offer eight moti, saptdhanya, netrapatt, shoes, kharaon, umbrella and various kinds of utencils and asan. After her poojan offer a cow with colt to a Brahmin who is a knower of Vedas. Arrange Brahmin  bhojan and give them dakshina. Then pray to devi,

O Devi! Who came out of churning of great ocean, resides on the chest of Lord Vishnu, granter of al wishes, may grant ridhi ot me also. I bow down to you.

One who does like this gets good fortune, beautiful body and progeny, wealth and is dear to her husband. Luxmi or goddess of wealth stays in the family for a period of 21 generations.

SHASHTHI:

It is said from Parmatama and Avyakt Prakriti, Ahamkaar was born which was named Shankar. This Shankar joined with Uma and gave birth to Kartikeya. It is said at one time their was great animosity between Devtas and Rakshasas and they wanted to kill each other. At that time Rakshasas were very strong because powerful Hirankashyapu, Hiranyaksh, Mahasur, Viprachiti, Vichitra, Bhimaksh, Kronch were with them. Devtas felt they can not defeat them as they did not have a general. So they requested Brahma, who in turn took them to Shiva at Kailash. They explained veverything to him and from him a burning effulgence appeared which converted into a child. He asked for two things to play with Devtas gave him a rooster and two attendants Shakh & Vishakh. Devtas told their mosery to Kartikeya and he startedepanding his effulgence. Then Lord Shiva told Kartikeya that since you are happy to receive two things from Devtas, now you become leader of Bhoot, Pret, Planets and Vinayaks and also become general of the army of Devtas. Since he came from agni he was also called Pavak, also since 6 Kritikas fed their milk to him he was also named Kartikeya. He appeared as a child and hence was also called Kaumaar. He represents Ahm or Ego of Shiva. Since all the things took place on Panchami, this tithi was given to him.

On the shashti of Kartik month one should eat only fruits. Doing this one gains victory. If a king who has lost his kingdom, performs this vratt, he will be able to receive his kingdom back. On this day one should offer Swami Kartikeya ghee, curd and water facing south direction with following mantra,

“Saptarshidaraj skand Swahapati Samudbhava,
Rudraryamagnij Vibho Gangagarbh Namoastu Te,
Priytam Dev Senanih Sampadayatu Hridgatam.”

Offer grains to a brahmin and eat fruits at night, sleep on the floor, keep your self clean, practice celibacy. This should be done in both shukla as well as krishan paksh.

Through this one gets sidhi, dhriti, tushti, rajya, long life, disease free body and moksha. Even divinities bow down to him. This tithi is good for removing all sins. One who experiences darshan of Kartikeya on this day gets free of even the karma of brahm hatya. Desired fruit is received and at the end one goes to the realm of Indra.
One who build his temple with bricks, stones  and wood goes to his realm in a plane.
If one offers a flag in his temple and cleanses the temple with broom, one goes to the realm of Rudra.
If poojan of Kartikeya is performed with Chandan, Agar, Karpoor etc. then one becomes owner of horses and elephants.( I think it means many grand transports) .

If one does his poojan before going in to battle field one becomes victorious. Do not use oil on Bhadrapad Shashthi.

Vishok Shashthi Vratt: It is observed during shuklpaksh of Magh month. On panchami get up in the morning and brush teeth, bath in water mixed with black til (sesame seeds) and take Krishar (khichari) as food. At night stay celibate. Next day on shashthi get up in the morning and have bath and make one golden lotus and meditate on it as Sun. Do its poojan with red chandan, flowers of karveer, two red clothes, dhoop and naivedya. With folded hands pray to Sun,

O Aditya Dev, as you have made your own place without any anguish, same way turn my home also. For lives together I should have your bhakti. Prashan of Gaumootr should be done in it. Give food to Brahmins. Offer jaggery, grains, two clothes and gold to Brahmin. On saptami stay in maun and eat food which is without salt & oil and listen to puran. This vratt should be performed for the whole year and in both paksh i.e shukla as well as krishan. At the end of vratta on shukla saptami take a kalash with golden lotus on it and other things along with a cow having a colt, offer them to a Brahmin. One should not perform this vratt miserly. One who does this vratt, for millions of years he remains without any anguish, disease, etc. All desires are fulfilled. If it is done without any desire then it provides moksha. Even if it is done for one time only, one gets free of anguish and resides in the realm of Indra, king of divines.

Kamal Shashthi Vratt: It is observed during the month of Margshirsh, shukla paksha shashthi. On krishan  paksh saptami offer a kalash to Brahmin with golden lotus, golden fruits and sharkara. Observe fast on both pakshas on shashthi for one year offering a kalash every time. Poojan of Sun should be done for full year with names as Bhanu, Ark, Ravi, Brahma, Surya, Shukra, Hari, Shiv, Shrimaan, Vibhavasu, Tvashta and Varun and at the end of poojan attach priyataam with the name. So the prayer mantra at the end becomes “Bhanurme Priyataam”,    “Arko me Priyataam” etc. This should be chanted at the time of poojan on /shashthi and offering during Saptami. At the end of vratt offer clothes, oranaments, a kalash full of sharkara, golden lotus, golden fruits to Brahmin couple after doing their poojan. Offering are made chanting the following sloka,

Yatha Phalkaro Masatvadbhaktanam Sada Rave,
Tathanantphalavaptirastu Janmani Janmani.  O Surya Dev as this vratt is beneficial to your bhaktas, same way I should also receive the desired fruits for lives and lives.

By dint of this vratt one stops drinking liquor and gets praised in the realm of Sun.
One’s 21 generations gets the benefit of it. Whosoever listens to it even gets benefited.


Lalita shashthi Vratt: This was told by Lord Krishna to Yudhishthir. Observed on shukla paksh shashthi of Bhadrpad. A woman who desires beautiful body, good fortune and progeny should take bath in a river and bring some sand in a new utensil made out of cane. Then she should make a mandap of clothes and light a Deepak in it. Then establish that patra or utensil inside the mandap and perform poojan of tapovan vasini Bhagwati Gauri in it. On that day maintain a fast. Offer 108 ahutis each of Champak, Karveer, Ashok, Malti, Neelotpal, Ketaki and Tagar flowers with following mantra,

Lalite Lalite Devi Saukhyasaubhagyadayani, Ya Saubhagyasamutpanna Tasyai Dvyai Namoh Namah. 

Also offer various kinds of Naivedya like laddu, Sohaal, Kooshmanda, Kakadi, Bilv, Karela. Brinjal etc to Bhagwati. Also offer dhoop, deep, vastra and ornaments. At night keep awake, sing & dance.

Next day take her statue near a river singing and playing musical instruments. Put the sand form statue of Bhagwati into the river and poojan things should be given to Brahmins. On returning home perform havan and poojan of devtas, pitras and suvasini ladies. Offer food to 15 kumaris and 15 brahmins and offer then dakshina chanting Lalita Pritiyukta Astu. Whosoever does this vratt gets everything howsoever difficult to get. Woman performing this vratt till her whole life enjoys good fortune and in the end goes to the realm of Gauri.

Kumar Shashthi Vratt: This is observed during Margshirsh month shukla shashthi which is good for wealth and grains, provides good fortune and removes all sins. Swami Kartikeya killed Tarakasur on this day, hence this tithi is liked by Kartikeya very much. Everything done on this day is eternal. One who has darshan of south direction living Swami Kartikeya, he is relieved of all the sins and even brahmhatya.

For this vratt make a statue of Kartikeya with Gold, Silver or even mud and perform its poojan. Take bath during Aprahn, take achman and sit in an asan and should meditate on Swami Kartikeya. Maintain fast on this day and perform abhishek of Kartikeya on his forehead with following mantra,

Chandramandalbhootanaam Bhavbhootipavitrata, Gangakumar Dhareyam Patita Tav Mastake.

Again do poojan of Sun and offer gandha, pushpa, dhoop, deep, naivedya etc to Kritikeya kumar with following mantra,

Devsenapati Skanda Kartikeya Bavodbhav, Kumar Guh Gangeya Shaktihasta Namostu Te.

One should offer fruits, grains of south and Malaya chandan. Then do poojan of Chag, Kukut, Kalapyukta Mayur, Mata Bhagwati and making a statue perform poojan of  Kartikeya. Then perform havan with sesame seeds. Then eat fruits and lie on ground on a kusha bed. Perform this for twelve months using Coconut, Matulung ( Bijaura nimbu), Narangi, Panas (Kathal), Jambeer (A type of lemon), Dadim, Draksha, Amr, Bilv, Amlak, Kaakdi and Kadli (Banana) as fruit to be used for that day. If these fruits are not available then se all those which are available during the season.

In morning offer a golden Chug or Golden Kuku to Brahmin saying Sinai  Priyataam. Offer food to Brahmins and eat yourself also keeping silent. At the end of the year on kart Keya month shukla paksh shashthi perform his poojan and offer clothes, ornaments and different things to Brahmins. One who does like this he enjoys all kind of fruits and goes to the realm of Indra. It is especially good for kings. One who goes to battle field after doing his poojan becomes victorious. One should observe naktr vratt on shashthi, he gets free of all the sins and resides in the realm of Swami Kartikeya. One should go towards south direction and have darshan of Kartikeya. Such a person goes to heavens for a long time and in t he end comes back to earth and becomes general of a great king.

SAPTAMI:

It is said on this day lord Sun appeared in an egg form and then developed further in it alone. Thus he was named MRATAND. Daksh prajapati gave his daughter Roopa also known as Sangya to him in marriage. Vishwakarma did samskar of his body and he became extremely effulgent. During his stay in egg Yama and Yamuna were born to him. Sangya was very beautiful and delicate. She could not face the heat of Sun and decided to leave him for some time. She created another female form, exactly like her named CHAYA and told her to live their like her in her absence. She should not divulge this secret to anyone. Thus creating Chaya, she left for her parents home and do tapasya in the area of northern Kuru. To keep her tapasya secret she converted her self in to a mare and roamed in the jungles.

Chaya continued to behave as Sangya in her absence and Sun could not find out the truth. From Chaya he begot three children. They were Savarni Manu, Shani and Tapti. One day Yamuna and Tapati has argument and both got converted in to rivers to flow on earth. Chaya liked her children more than the Yama and Yamuna, children born from Chaya. One day she rebuked Yama, who in his anger raised his foot to hit her. She cursed him that if he ever put his foot on earth again it will eaten by insects. Yama went to his father and explained to him the whole matter and claimed that she is not his mother as a mother can never curse her own children. Sun intervened and came to know of the truth. He soothed his son Yama by saying that not to worry because the moment he will put his foot down on earth, moths will take some flesh and blood and his foot will be cured of the curse and he was made the devta of death. He gave a boon to Yamuna to become a sacred river on earth and Tapati to be just like great river Narmada. People will get cured of their sins by bathing in Ganga, by having darshan of Narmada and by just thinking of Tapati. Coming to the moot point of whole problem, Sun declared that from now on everyone will have a chaya/shadow struck with their bodies and it wont ever disassociate from it. Thus humans got shadows which always followed them.

It is said Sun got very angry with Chaya and in the heat of his anger Chaya got burnt. This caused her children Savarni Manu and Saturn to turn against him. Sun went looking for Sangya to Daksh who told him that because of his(Sun’s) heat herSangya’s) whole body was burning. To make her self able to endure his effulgence she had gone to do tapasya in Uttar Kuru area. Sun went their and found her in the form of a mare. He mated with her and out of their union two children were born and they were Ashwini kumar (in the form of two horses) .  They were named Dasya and Nastya. Then Sun went the Vishwakarma on the advice of his father-in-law Daksh to get his effulgence reduced a bit to enable Sangya stay comfortably with him. When Vishwakarma started scraping his body with chisel he felt great pain and from time to time fall unconscious. When only his feet were left, he complained of sever pain and asked for Vishvakarma to stop. Then Vishwakarma told him to smear a paste of Karveer flowers, red chandan and water over his body to alleviate the pain. After this operation Sun became extremely beautiful and Sangya happily lived with him.From that day it has become a standard procedure during the poojan of lord Sun, that to propitiate him arghya should include red Karveer flowers, red chandan mixed with water.

Due to burning of Chaya, both Savarni Manu and Saturn became arch rivals of their father Sun and challenged him to a battle. Battle started and went on for long time. Both the sons were easily fighting with their father. When they were not defeated Sun disappeared from the battle ground. Then his other two suns in the form of Ashwini Kumars took charge and defeated the rivals. They tied both of them and brought them I front of their father. Sun took up an iron rod and beat them with it. It is said due to it both became lame. It is also said that from these two Manu and Saturn, two more entities came out and they were Rahu and Ketu. 

Though Sun defeated Manu and Saturn, but still Rahu and Ketu keep troubling Sun during eclipse periods.
Sun found Sangya in the forest on Saptami and Ashwini Kumars were bought to him on the 7th tithi, hence it became his favourite.

One should eat once on 5th, observe fast on 6th, on 7th fating he should perform poojan of lord Sun and offer many eatables to him. Remain maun at night. By dint of this one enjoys everything, gains victory over is enemies, stays in the realm of Sun for amny manvantars and later gets born as a chakravarti king blessed with children and good wife.

King Kuru also observed same fast and ate only Shak. Hence he begot Kurukshetra land and named it 
Dharamkshetra. 7th of Magh month, 8th of Ashwin and 9th of Vaishakh month are very special. This vrat should be started from Kartik month, shukla saptami.

Best Shak should be offered to a Brahmin and same shall be eaten by onself at night observing silence. Practice it for every saptami for four months and then offer bath to the lord with Panchgavya, offer saffron, flowers of Agastya, dhoop of Aprajita and kheer. Brahmin should also be offerd kheer to eat.

During second paran, after bathing of Sun, one should drink Gomaya oneself and offer white chandan, fragrant flowers, agar dhoop, apoop out of wheat flour and jaggery.

During thrd paran, perform bath of Sun, after smearing his body with Sarshap paste( mustard seeds) , then offer red chandan, flowers of Karveer, dhoop of Guggal, many different eatables. Later Brahmins should eat them. Listen to Puran from them or share with them. Offer clothes and dakshina and make them happy. This way lord Sun also get pleased. By the effect of this vrat all the sins get burnt.
Mantra of Sun is “OM! KHAKOLKAYE NAMAH”.

During the month of Magh;

On 5th, panchami observe Ekbhukt vratt eating only once around 4pm, on 6th , Shashthi eat only at night and on 7th, Saptami perform poojan of Sun with red chandan, Karveer flowers, Guggal dhoop, Kheer. This vrat should be performed for four months ending in magh. For atma shudhi bath in gomaya mixed water.
During the four months of Jyeshtha etc. perform poojan of Sun with white flowers, white chandan, black Agar dhoop, and excellent eatables. During paran take panchgavya and offer best food to Brahmins.

During the four months of Ashmin etc perform poojan of the Sun with Agastya flowers, Aprajita dhoop, puas made of Jagery, cane juice and other different eatables. For Atma shudhi drink Kusha water in paran.

For completion of the four month fast offer a chariot of Sun on during Magh month, shukla Saptami. Celebrate Chariot faestival for the pleasure of lord Sun.   

During month of Vasant-Sun is Black in colour – and generates fear.
During month of Summers- Sun is golden in colour-
During month of Rains – Sun is white in colour – death for raajpurohit.
During month of Sharad – Sun id yellow in colour – death of a Prince.
During month of Hemant – Sun is copper coloured – annihilation of a general.
During month of Shishir – Sun is red in colour

When sun is smoky in colour the there is fear of thieves and armaments. But if it rains during these colour then there bad effect is removed.

PHAL (fruit) Saptami Vratt: Bhadrapad Shukla Chaturthi- Do ayachit. On Panchami eat once only, on Shashthi do full day fast with control over all the senses during the day after performing morning poojan of lord Sun. At night sleep on ground in front of the lord. On Saptami offer dates, coconut, mangoes, matulung to the lord. Offer to Brahmins and eat oneself as well. If fruits are not available then take rice flour mix it with jaggery , ghee and cook on fire and then offer it to the lord Sun. After this perform a havan and offer food to Brahmins.  Do it like this for full one year and at the end finish the vratt by taking bath in a mixture of gaumootr, gomaya, cows milk & curd, ghee made from cows milk, kusha water, white mritika, sesame seeds, paste of sarson, durva, water from the cows horns, Chameli flowers. And also drink it.

All kinds of fruits, cow along with her colt, Tamrpatra along with Vidrum, white cloth, house full of grains and cultivable land should be given to brahimns in offering. One who has means at his disposal may offer precious stones, gold, silver, clothes to acharya and food to Brahmins.

This removes all kinds of sins and in the end one goes to the realm of Sun. One gets free of all kinds of sins, difficulties, sorrows and abject poverty. Brahmin gets mukti, Kshatriya gets ralm of Indra, Vaishya gets realm of Kuber and Shudra gets birth as Brahmin. Aperson who has no son getsa son and womes who are widow never become widows in their next life.

Rahasya Saptami: It should be commenced in Chaitra month. Perform poojan of twelve adityas. Keeping the spirit of friendship, meditate on Sun, take bath in Amla water. Do not touch oil on this day, do not wear any blue colour, do not go in to the garden of blue trees. Where Neel is grown even once that earth is desacreted for next twelve years. Even if blue colours enters our pores, three Krichchandrayag vratt are required to be performed for cleansing. It is bad for wife / beloved if  oil is even touched on this day.

Every Saptami one should offer food to BHOJAK (pujari of Sun temple) with ghee. One should also offer a utensil full of ghee, along with one masha( unit of weight) gold in dakshina to him. If BHOJAK is not available then offer it to a brahim only along with other things.

Doing poojan of Sun with,

White Lotus - it grants good fortune; with fragrant Kutuj flowers - it grants grandeur, wealth, pomp; with flowers of Mandaar – removes all kinds of leprosy; with garlands of Mandaar flowers – it provides all desires; with Bela flowers – one goes to the realm of Sun; with garland of Bakul (maunsari) flowers- it grants beautiful girl; with flowers of Palash – it guards against all kinds of negativity; if with flowers of Agastya – one gets grace of the lord; if done with Kaner flowers – it makes one attendant of the lord; if done with 1000 lotuses – it grants residence in the realm of Sun; if done by smearing with mixture of musk, chandan, kumkum, karpoor called Yaksh Kardam – one gets great evolvement after death; if one does the smearing of Sun temple fresh earth – one gets free of all eighteen kinds of leprosies; if anoints the mandir with Geru then one gets wealth and gets free of all kinds of diseases.

It is said that out of all the flowers Karveer and out of all kinds of anointments red chandan is best.

After anointment of mandir if one draws a mandal also then realm of Sun is achieved.

By making ONE mandal one gets wealth,
By making TWO mandals one gets disease free body,
By making THREE mandals one gets continuous progeny,
By making FOUR mandals one gets Luxmi,
By making FIVE mandlas one gets great wealth and grains,
By making SIX mandals one gets long life, power and repute,
By making SEVEN mandals one gets control, wealth, sons, long life, kingdom and realm of lord Sun.
By burning a Deepak in Sun temple one gets cured of the diseases of eyes.
It offered Deepak is burnt with sesame seed oil then realm of Sun is granted.
If burnt with Kadva oil then victory over enemies.

First of all perform the poojan of the lord with incense, flowers, deep, dhoop and offer many kinds of eatables (naivedya). In flowers use Karveer, in dhoops use Vijaya dhoop (specially made), use Kumkum for gandh. Use red chandan for anointing, in deep use ghee, in eatables offer Laddu. These things are very much liked by Sun. After poojan do circumambulation and offer your prostrations.

Take one seed of mustard in hand along with some water, standing in front of Sun meditating on particular desire drink it taking care that it should not touch our lips and teeth. Similarly on second saptami use two seeds, on third saptami three, on fourth four and thus seven seeds be used on seventh saptami. This is called Sarshap Saptami vartt.

During first Saptami use water, on second Saptami use ghee, on third Saptami use honey, on fourth Saptmi use curd, on fifth Saptami use milk, on sixth Saptami use gomaya and on seventh Saptami use  Panchgavya.
Next day take bath, perform poojan, japa. havan and offer red clothes, milk giving cow, good food, other liked things to the Bhojaks.These things should be offered during Madhyaan, If a Bhojak is not available then give it to any Brahmin who is a knower of Samveda.

Three places are best for Sun poojan, Indravan, Mundeer, Sambpur ( Multan in Pakistan). Sun has got twelve different forms as detailed below: 

Indra-established in the kind of devtas-gives victory over all the Daityas and Rakshas.
Dhata-established in Prajapati Brahma-busy in creation.
Parjanya-established in the rays of the Sun-rains down nectar.
Poosha-established in mantras-looks after well being of all.
Tvashta-established in vegetable and medicinal kingdom.
Aryama-established in various Pur-guards everything.
Bhag-established in earth and the mountains.
Vivasvaan-established in fire-eatws all the jeevas and digests food in our body.
Anshu-established in Moon-making the world full of nectar or ras.
Vishnu-Kills all the daityas.
Varun-establised in Oceans-life giving.
Mitr-established on the banks of Chandrabhaga river- looks after the welfare of the world.
      One who does shradh on Sundays remain disease free for 7 lives.
If one does path of Aditya Hridaya stotra then he is granted disease free body and resides in the realm of Sun.
If Gayatri japa is done keeping a fast then desired fruit is received.
If Gayatri and Sun mantra Om! Khkholkaye Swaha jap is done together the realm of sun achieved.

There are in all twelve vratt of lord Sun.

1.Magh Shukla Shashathi is called Nand. Perform Naktra vrat. Bath Sun with ghee, white chandan, Agastya flowers, Guggal, Dhoop and eatables. Offer Apoops to Brahmin and eat keeping silence. Apoop or Puas can be made with wheat flour or Yav mixed with shakkar and ghee.
While offering food to the Brahmins chant the following mantra,
Adityatejsotpannam Ragyikar Vinirmittam,
Shreyase Mam Vipra Tvam Pratiksha Poopamuttamam.
While offering to the poojaks chant following sloka,
Kaamadam Sukhdam Dharmayam Dhandam Putradam Tatha,
Sadastu Te Pratichami Mandakam Bhaskar Priyam.
Progeny is always taken care of, disease and poverty removed, luxmi or wealth stays permanently with sadhak and one attains realm of Sun.

2.Bhadrapad, Shukla Shashathi: Perform Naktr Vrat and do fasting, do poojan of the lord Sun with white chandan, Malti flowers, Vijaya Dhoop, Kheer at Madhyan kaal/time, offer food to Brahmins and dakshina should also be given to them.

3.If on a Sunday Rohini Nakshatra is also there then it is called Saumyavaar. Snaan, daan, Jap, Hom, Pitr and Dev tarpan, poojans done on this day are akshay or eternal.

4.Margshirsh, Shukla paksh, Shashthi is called Kamad Vaar and this day is very much liked by lord Sun. On 
this day perform Sun poojan with full bhakti and love. During this vratt all the pataks are removed, students get knowledge, one who does with a desire of son gets son, one who wants good health gets good health and one who wants wealth gets wealth. Since all desires are fulfilled hence it is called Kamada.

5.If it is a Sunday with Hast Nakshatra then it is called Putrad. On this day one should undertake fast, shradh and eat middle pind of the three pandas offered. Use dhoop, garland, divine fragrance and Gayatri mantra japa during poojan of Sun. At night sleep in front of the lord, in the morning after bath offer arghya to Sun. Then with red chandan, Karveer flowers perform poojan. Take five Brahmins; out of them two be called MANG while other three are called BHEEM. Perform Parvan sharadh. Afterwards place the middle pind infront of Sun, charge it with his mantra and eat it with following mantra,
Sa Eish Pind Devesh Yoaabhishtstav Sarvada, Ashnami Pashyate Tubhyam Ten Me Santatirbhawet. Since by this fasting male children are received hence it is called Putrad.

6.Dakshinayan day is called Jayavaar. On this day undertake fast as per Naktr vratt, have bath and do japa, poojan and daan. Doing all this on this particular day ones love and devotion towards Sun multiplies one hundred fold.

7.Sunday on the day of Uttrayan is called Jayant. On this perform bath of Sun with ghee, cane juice and milk. Do poojan with Guggal dhoop, Laddus, and perform havan with sesame seeds. Anoint with kumkum. Offer laddu, sesame seeds and Pooris to Brahmin.

8.Shukla Paksha, Rohini nakshatra, Sunday ad Saptami is called Vijaya.This tithi is vary special, it annihilates all the sins of the sadhak and multiplies good deeds by millions of times.

9.Magh month, Krishan Paksh, Sapti is called Adityabhimukh. Take bath in the morning, bath Sun, perform poojan with gandh and pushp, take support of pole made out of the wood of red chandan, facing the sun do japa of Gayatri till evening standing there. After that offer food to Brahmins along with dakshina. Then eat food keeping silent. This way grace of sun is received.

10.Sunday on a sankranti day is called Hridyavaar. Undertake Naktr Vratt, in Sun temple, in front of the lord chant Aditya Hridya Stotra 108 times or meditate on his heart till evening. At sunset come back home and offer food, kheer and dakshina to Brahmins as much as I can give comfortably.  After them one should also eat food and kheer keeping slent. Then sleep on floor in front of the lord during the night All the desires are fulfilled, one gets repute, his physical beauty increases and effulgence radiated.

11.If it is a Sunday with Uttar Phalguni Nakshtra it is called Roghavaar. On this perform poojan of the lord with dhoop, deep, gandh, push. At night offer flowers to the lord in cups made out of Mandaar leafs by placing in front of him.  In the morning pick them up and do his poojan with them only. Offer Kheer to the lord and eating same finish the vrat. It removes all kinds of diseases.

12.If it is a Sunday on the day of solar eclipse then it is called Mahashwetvaar. On this day perform poojan of the lord, do gayatri  japa, havan with sesame seeds. During eclipse keep doing japa. After eclipse take bath again and again do Gayatri japa and poojan of Sun. Then read Puran to Brahmins and give them food. In the last eat food keeping silent.

It is said that Poojan done during poorvahn is eaqual to offering of hundreds of kapila cows; Poojan done during Madhyaan equals the fuit of offering of hundreds of Kapila cows and offering of land; Poojan done during Saanykaal(dusk) wearing a white turban and clean fresh clothes bears the fruit equal to offering of hundreds of kapila cows; Poojan done during Midnight makes a very religious person to take birth in the house; Poojan done during Pradoshvela one enjoys stay in heavens for a very long time; Poojan done during Prabhatvela gives residence in Devlok; Poojan done during both Ayans-samkranti (six monthly change over times) one attains the realm of Brahma; Poojan done during the time of eclipse all the mental agonies are removed and bowing down to Sun just after getting up from sleep gives desired fruit.

Jaya Saptami Vrat: It is during Hast nakshatra when shukla paksh is also there. During ancient times Sun attacked the Hasta nakshatra on this very day only. It removes all sins, fulfills all desires, gives male children and wealth.

One should make a golden statue of Sun holding lotuses in both of his hands and do its poojan for complete one year. Use Karveer flowers, rad chandan, Guggal dhoop, laddus made out of lf.wheat flour for naivadya offering to lord.Three Paranas are done in this case.

On Saptami do fast and on Ashtami break the fast. For it take bath in water mixed with yellow mustard seeds, drink Gomaya, and use Madaar datum ( brush made out of wood) for cleaning of teeth.

Perform everything saying “Bhanurme Priyataam”.

During second paran, use Malti flowers, Srikhand Chandan, Kheer, Vijaya dhoop, offer to Brahmins and eat same food oneself also. Say “Ravirme Priyataam”. Use Panchgavya for prashan and use Khadeer tree twig for cleaning of teeth.

Durind third paran use Agstya flowers, Srikhand, Simhalak dhoop and use kusha water for prashan. Use Ber tree twig for teeth cleaning. While doing everything repeat “Vikartani Priytaam”.
This particular fast gives great repute and fortunes, grains, gold, power, children.

Jayanti saptami: It falls on the saptami of shukla paksh of month of Magh. Remian Ekbhukt on Panchami, on shashthi Nakt vratt and on saptami undertake complete fast. On all the saptami during the months of Magh, Phalgun and Chaitra, perform poojan with Bakul flowers, anoint with kumkum, offer laddu naivedya, offer dhoop of ghrit and do prashan with panchgavya. Doing this one gets the fruit of doing Ashmedh yajna and Rajsuya yajna. While doing all the things keep repeating “Chitrabahnu Priyataam”.

Second paran is during the months of Vishakh, Jyeshtha, Ashadh. Perform poojan of Sun with 100 petalled lotus, white chandan, Guggal dhoop, apoop made with wheat flour and jaggery. Offer same to the Brahmins also. Repeat “Bhanu Priyataam”. It removes all the sins.

Third paran is done during the months of Shravan, Bhadrpad, Ashwin. Perform poojan of Sun with Malti flowers, red chandan, Vijaya dhoop, apoops made out of ghee. Offer same to Brahmins. After cleaning the body, drink water of kusha. Repeat “Adityah Priytaam”. All sins removed.

During the months of Kartik, Margshirsh andPaush perform the poojan of Sun with red Kaner flowers, red Chandan, Amrit Dhoop, kheer. Do prashan with white cows matha(butter milk).

By observing the saptami vrat like above fo complete one year one is victorious every where, gets sons, wealth, grains, is freed from all kinds of diseases, all desires fulfilled, gets mukti and attains the realm of Sun.
Aprajita saptami:  It falls on Bhadrpad shukla paksh. On fourth observe Akbhukt vratt, on panchami observe Nkatr Vratt, on shashthi observe full fast and on saptami perform paran, this is the general rule of this particular vratt. Use Karveer flowers, rad chandan, Guggal dhoop, appops made with jaggery. In the three months of Bhadrpad etc. use white flowers, white chandan, dhoop made in ghee, kheer. Repeat “Sudhanshu Priytaam” while doing everything.For prashan use Gaumootr.

In the three months of Margshirsh etc use Agastya flowers, anonint with Kumkum, offer Sinhlak dhoop, ofer naivadya made out of Shali dhan. Repeat “Aryama Priytaam”. Do prashan with panchgavya.

In Phalgun etc three months use red lotus flowers, Agar, Chandan, Anant dhoop, Shakkar or Misri khand apoops, in poojan. Repeat “Savita Priyataam” all the time. Do prashan with Ghrit.

In Jyeshta etc. months also perform same way. Repeat “Tipurantak Priyataam” all the time. Prashan should be done with hot milk.

Observing the fast in this manner all the enemies are defeated, after words on attains Dharm, Arth, kaam- the three fruits. In the end one attains realm of Sun. Then boarding a white horses drawn chariot with golden flags one goes to the realm of Varun dev and becomes his favorite.

Mahajaya Saptami: During Shukla paksh saptami when sun expands, then mahajaya saptami occurs. Bath, Daan, Japa, Havan, Pitr dev poojan done on this day bear millions of times fruit.

Nanda Saptami: Margshirsh, shuklapaksh, saptami is called Nanda Saptami. Perform Ekbhukt on panchami, Naktvrat on shashathi and full fasting on saptami. Three parnas are done in it.

During poojan use Malti fliwers, fragrance, Chandan, Karpoor, Agar, mixed dhoop, dahi along with shakkar/khand as naivedya(food offering). Same should be offered to Brahmins in food. Same things should also eaten personally. 

In first paran use Paksak dhoop, palash flowers, apoops made with shakkar for offering to the lord. Also offer same things to the Brahmins to eat. Repeat “Vishnu Priytaam” all the time.

In the second paran use Prabodh dhoop, apoops made out of Sharkara. Offer same as food to Brahmins. Do prashan of Neemb leaf. One should eat same food observing silence. Repeat “Bhag Priyataam”.

In the third paran use Neel/ White lotus flowers, Guggal dhoop, Kheer and anoint with chandan. Prashan should also be done with chandan. Repeat “Dhata Priyataam”.

Doing like this al the desires are fulfilled and till end one remains blissfull, and goes to the realm of Sun after leaving this body.

Bhadra Saptami Vratt: It falls on saptami of Shukla paksh with Hast nakshatra. On chaturthi perform Ekbhukt vratt, on Panchami perform Naktra vratt, on Shashthi observe Ayachit and on saptami observe full fasting. Bath the lord with ghee, milk and cane juice. Afterwards anoint with chandan paste. Do not sleep during the day, do not meet any hypocritical or sanctimonious persons and others who keep us away from doing good deeds. If we do like this then RIBHU dev provides all the materials or things which are for our benefit.

On this a statue of Bhadra (vrishabh) with Shali flour and offer it to Sun. It is called Bhadra putr. One who does like this, his whole life he feels anand or joy.

It was the Lord Sun only who gave various tithes to different divinities as below:

Pratipada or Ist day was given to Agni, Dwitya was given to Brahma, Tritiya was given to Kuber, the king of Yakshas, Chaturthi was given to Ganesha, Panchami was given to Nagas, Shashthi was given to Kartikeya, Spatami was meant for Sun, Ashtami was given to Rudra, Navmi was given to Durga, Dashmi was given to Yam, king of death, Ekadashi was given to Vishvadevas, Dwadashi was given to Vishnu, Trayodashi was given to Kaamdev, Chaturdashi was given to Shankar and Purnima / full moon night was given to Moon while Amvasya or no moon night was kept for Pitras or ancestors. It was further clarified that as to what should be done on these days.

Pratipada-Do havan of Ghrit in the havan agni – as a result of it lot of grains and wealth provided
Dwitya-Perform the poojan of Brahm – One gets knowledge of all vidyas.Tritiya-Perform Kuber Poojan- one receives great wealth and profits in business; Chaturthi -Do Ganesh poojan – all obstructions removed; Panchami-Do naag poojan- fear of snakes and poison removed and all men and women get wealth; Shashthi: poojan of Kartikeya- it cultivates intelligence, good looks, long life, increases repute and glory of the performer; Saptami-Do poojan of Chitrbhanu(sun) whi is the saviour of all and everyone; Ashtami-do poojan of Sadashiv astride a buffalo-provides ample knowledge and great appearance, remover of death, cutter of all kinds of snares; Navmi: Perform Durga poojan- one easily clears the ocean of life, one gets victorious in battle as well as dealing with people; Dashmi: perform Yam poojan-all diseases are removed and transcends hell and death; Ekadashi: poojan of Vishwadevas-provides progeny, grains and wealth, provides land ownership; Dwadashi- poojan of Lord Vishnu- always victorious and is praised in the all the divine realms; Trayodashi: poojan of Kaamdev, God of cupid-provides beautiful body, desired wife, all desires fulfilled; Charudashi: perform the poojan of devdeveshwar Sadashiv-povides every grandeur & pomp, great wealth, many mole progeny; Poornima: poojan of moon-gives control over whole of the world; Amavasya: poojan of pitras or ancestors- increases no of subjects at command, guards wealth, provides power.  
Similarly details were provided for poojan of Nakshatras as below:

Ashwin-Poojan of Ashwini kumars-All required things received; Bharni-poojan of Yam with dark coloured flowers and karpoor etc fragrances-untimely death removed; Kritika- do poojan of Agni dev with red coloured flowers garland and havan-ample fruits of ones labour provided; Rohini-do poojan of Brahma-all desires fulfilled; Mrigshira-poojan of Chandradev-knowledge and disease free body; Ardra-Shiv poojan with lotus flowers-victory provided; Punarvasu- poojan of mother Aditi of the divinities- she guards one like mother; Pushya- poojan of Brihaspati, Guru of the all devtas- ample right intelligence; Ashlesha-Naag poojan-removes fear and snakes do not bite; Magha- offer poojan and eatables to all the ancestors-ample grain and wealth provided, many progeny, cattle etc provided; Poorv Phalguni- poojan of Sun or Poosha- victory provided; Uttar Phalguni- poojan of Bhag with flowers- provides victory, desired husband to a girl, beauty and wealth; Hasta-Poojan of Sun with flowers-all kinds of wealth; Chitra- poojan of Tvashta- provided kingdom without enemies; Swati- poojan of Vaayu devta- provides great power and energy after getting pleased; Vishakha- poojan of Indragni with red flowers- wealth and grains provided; Anuradha-poojan of Mitradev with red flowers- great wealth received and long life granted; Jyeshtha- Indra poojan- provided nourishment, becomes great by qualities, wealth and karma; Mool- poojan of all devtas and pitras- resides in heaven for a very long time; Poorvashadh- Pooja of Jal devta or Varun dev and havan- removal of all physical and mental anguish; Uttrashadh- poojan of Vishwadev and lord Vishveshwara- everything received; Shravan- poojan of lord Vishnu with white, blue and yellow flowers- greatest wealth and victory provided; Dhanishtha- poojan of ashta Vasu with fragrance and flowers- removal of fear, every where one is fearless; Shatbhisha- Indra poojan- removes all the ailments, provides grandeur; good health; Poorvbhadrapad-lord who is unborn and shining like a crystal- provided g]highest bhakti and victory; Uttar Bhadrapad- poojan of Ahirbudhanya- for great peace; Revti- poojan of lord Pusha- always welfare, victory and immovable dhriti.
Trivarg Saptami: It falls in month of Phalgun, shuklapaksh saptami. On this day with complete bhakti time and again perform poojan of Heli named Surya. Observe fast on this day, perform dev poojan and after that do 108 jap of ‘Hamsa’. Offer water at the feet of sun three times. Do similary during Chaitra, Vaishakh and Jyeshtha.  One gets best gati in mritulok also. In the end one attains realm ofSun. Remember Heli all times during this vratt.

Ashwin, Shravan, Bhadr and Ashwin months perform the poojan of Martand and observe fast. In prashan use gaumootr. Thus one gets cleansed and goes to the realm of Kuber.

During the four months of Kartik etc. perform Poojan and japa of Bhaskar. One goes to realm of Sun in the end.

Every month ake offerings to Brahmins. At the end of four month vratt, arrange a katha of puranas and kirtan. 

Perform poojan of the katha vachak (one who lectures on Puran), perform shradh karma, use maal puas in the shradh bhojan. This vratt gives Dharm, Arth and Kaam-hence it is called Trivarg Saptami vratt.

Kamad / Paap Nashini Vratt: During the month of Phalgun, Shukla paksh and Saptami this vrat is observed. Perform poojan of Surya narayan. Arise early on ashtami, have bath, perform Surya poojan, then offer dakshina to Brahmins and ahutis in havan. Offer prostrations to Bhaskar and request him that “ As Savitri, Aditi and Devraj /indra got all their desires fulfilled by performing your poojan , please fulfill my desires also.” After poojan eat Havishyaan. Pahlgun, chaitra, Vishakh and Jayeshtha- all the four months do like this. Use Karveer flowers in the poojan. Burn Krishan Agar, do prashan with water from the horns of a cow, offer naivadya made with sugar mixed in it and offer food to Brahmins.   

During Poorv Ashadh, Uttar Ashadh, Shravan and Dhanishtha – these four months use Chameli flowers in poojan, Guggal dhoop, water of a well, Kheer as naivadya to Sun. Eat same food onnself also.
In the four months of Kartik etc also use gomoootra for shodhan of the body, burn Dashang dhoop, use red lotus flowers, offer naivedya of Kasaar( made out of wheat flour) and offer to Sun. Every month give dakshina to Brahmins. At the end of Paran offer bath to the lord with water. This vratt is very propitious, annihilates all sins, offer all kind of fruits. Makes one effulgent like Sun, one goes to the realm of Surya on a chariot in the end.

Surya Pad-dwaya Vratt: Uttarayan is called left foot of Sun and Dakshinayan is called right foot of the sun. During Uttarayan poojan of Vishnu and Shankar is performed while during Dakshinayan poojan of ones in human forms is done. At the start of Uttarayan bath the lord with ghrit and milk, offer beautiful clothes to wear, flowers, dhoop, anointments etc. After wards offer food to Brahmins and give them dakshina.
After bath, do poojan of Chitrabhanu, everyday repeat his name all the time, pray to him that ‘ You are the Parmatama form of Par Brahm, at the last moment I will remember you as Suryanarayan is my ultimate gati.” Do all this till Dakshinayan comes. After that as per your limits offer food to Brahmins, read katha in front of the Martand, poojan of the writer. If one does like this,  in this very life one gets free of all kinds of sins. If within six months the vratt observer dies, he gets the benefit of full vratt.

Sarv Saptami: Duirn the month of Magh, Krishan Paksh, Sarvapti Saptami is observed for six months. Sankrantis of the six months is taken as oaran time. Various names of lord to be used for poojan during these six months are ‘Martand’,‘Ka’, ‘Chitrabhanu’, ‘Vibhavasu’, ‘Bhag’, and ‘Hamsa’. Use ghee and milk etc panchgavya for bath and prashan. This vratt removes all sins.

Do not use oil, saline things and remain awake at night meditating or doing the japa of the lord.

Martand Saptami: It is observed during the month of Paush, shukla paksh, saptami tithi. On this day perform the poojan of Martand and do japa of the same name keeping fast. Also do poojan of Brahmin. Carry on like this for full one year. Vrat should be started from 7th tithi only. Repeat this for the second year also and in the name of Surya Narayan give a cow in daan.All the nakshatras also prayed to Martand and as a result they lighted up the space.

Anant Saptami: It falls in Bhadrpad month, on saptami. Bow to the Surya Narayan with a chariot of seven horses. Perform poojan with flowers, dhoop and many other things. Keep away from hypocrites, immoral and wicked. Offer dakshina to Brahmins and observing silence eat at night only. Whole of the time keep repeating the name of Aitya. Like this do for complete one year. At the end during paran of the vratt listen to Puran talk. This way Surya Narayan gets very pleased and grants unlimited fruits.

Avyang Saptami: celebrated on shukla saptami of Shravan month. It is said lord Sun used the discarded skin of Vasuki as a belt, which is called Avyang. So it became a rule in the Surya upasaks (bhojaks) to wear an avyang on their wiast also. Thus a Avyang should be offered to Surya Narayan on this day. Then the whole ritual should be celebrated with palying of trumpets etc and Brahmins should chant Ved mantras. This should be done in every Shravn. As a result fo this one attain realm of the divines.

Triprapati Vrat: It is observe durin the month of Magh, Krishan paksh and Saptami when hast nakshatra is there. Offer frangrance, dhoop, naivedya, many gifts and use different poojan things for poojan of the lord. Married men should pray with flowers and giving daan for full one year. Twelve things to be offered during twelve months are Vajr(bajra)1, Sesame seeds2, Vrihi3, Yav4, Gold5, Yav6,Grains7, Water8, water of the hails9, Upanaha10, Chatra11, Jaggery12 . For atmashudhi different things are used for prashan during these twelve months. They are Shak1, Gomotr2, Water3, Ghrit4, Durva5, Dadhi6, Dhanya7, Sesame seeds8, Yav9, water heater by rays of the sun10, Kamal gatta11, Milk12.  Doing like this one gets great amount of grains and wealth, all sorrows removed, takes birth in a highly elevated family, with control over all the senses, disease free, intelligent and happy. One can also anoint with a mixture of Chandan, Agar, Kumkum and Ushir. He gets pleased with it and provides Luxmi to the anointer.

Trivikram Vratt: This is observed during the month of Kartik. On everyday perform poojan of Surya/Sun, offer food to Brahmins, eat only once a day. This way all the sins of the childhood get removed.

During the month of Margshirsh, observe fast, give Markatmani to Brahmin in daan. By doing this all the sins performed during youth are removed.

During the month of Paush, perform Ekbhukt vratt, with poojan of the lord thus all the sins of old age are removed. By performing this vratt for ONE year all the small sins are removed; by performing it for TWO years all UPPATAKS are removed; by doing it for THREE years all MAHAPATAKS are removed. Thus this vrat is completed by observing three months in a year and should be done for three years in a row.

Nikshubhark Saptami: It is to be done on a Shashthi, Saptami or Sankrant or a Sunday. Perform poojan of Surya along with his wife Nikshubha in the form of Duao, make statues in gold, Silver or Bronze. Bath it in Ghee. Offer gandh, garlands, clothes and ornaments. Where the statue is established offer a chatra(umbrella) over head. Establish every thing over a pedestal. Make a circumambulation, do prostration, ask for forgiveness for any thing done wrongly, keep fast and perform a havan. Offer white clothes to all the Surya bhakt Brahmins and serve them food.

Any woman who does this for complete one year and restrains from eating food on all saptamis, makes statues of Nikshubha and Sun with grains, gives it bath, performs its poojan, she gets all the desired fruits. The relation between men and women is always loving, non-separable, and provides Dharm, Arth and Kaam.
Any women who on Saptami of Krishan paksh observes fast throughout the year and at the end year end prepares beautiful statue out of Shali churn of Sun and Nikshubhark , gives it bath, does its poojan, offers it clothes and then offer every karma to lord Sun, boards a white plane and goes to the realm of Surya and stays there for a period hundreds of millions of years. On coming back to earth she gets a desired husband and is well equipped with grains and wealth whole of her life.

During the month of Magh, krishan Paksh, Saptami if a woman fasts and leaves aside the pleasures of all kinds of bhogs for one years time and at the end of the year offers things to Nikshibhark Mahadevi with gandha and offers food to the wives of Bhag, she is flown to the realm of Sun in a plane looked after by Gandharvas. She resides there for hundreds of years. When she returns to this earth again she becomes a queen.

Kaamprad Istri Vrat: this is done from the Kartik month and in both of its pakshas. On shashthi and Saptami both with great bhakti, sense control and ahimsa observe Ekbhukta vrat and then offer ghee, jaggery and Shalidhann to the Sun. Also offer Karveer flpwers, Ghee and Guggal in poojan. Such a woman lives for a period of one million years in the relam of Surya and when she comes back on to this earth she gets desired kind of husband.

Sapt Saptami: these saptamis are Arksamputika1, Marich saptami2, Neemb Saptami3, Phal Saptami4, Anodana Saptami5, Vijaya Saptami6 and Kamik spaptami7.

Either uttarayan or Dakshinayan, shukla mpaksh, Sunday, during an ex=clipse, when male nakshatra is there start this vrat. On panchami observe Ekbhukt, on Shashthi observe Naktr vratt with control over senses and abstain from undesirable things.

By having Ark alone,seven generations wealth stays in the family thus Arksamputika is observed; By taking Marich, one gets company of dear son thus Marich saptami is observed; By taking only Neem patra, all diseases removed thus Neemb Saptami is observed, by eating only fruits, blessed with many progeny thus Phal Saptami is observed; By taking only grains,great wealth, grains, cattle gold, disease free body, all kinds of pleasures provided thus Annodana Spatami is observed; By sustaining on air alone,all enemies killed thus Viijya saptami is observed, while eating only havishyaan, male progeny, wealth, knowledge, kingship and all desired things granted thus Kartik Saptami is observed.

Observer of such a fast must keep his senses under control, reamin pure and keep busy in worship of Surya, perform havan for it and do jap of its mantra. In the end goes to the realm of Surya.

Dwadash Maas Saptami: In the Saptamis of Chaitra etc for complete 12 months one should fast with gomaya, Yavak, dry leaves, milk, Bhikshann or Ekbhukt. Offer lotus flower to Surya, many different kinds of fragrances, Chandan, guggal, dhoop in poojan of Surya. Even  Brahmins should also be poojit with same things. Offer them best possible dakshina. By doing this one gets the fruit of performing yajnas which require immense dakshina.

Twelve names of Surya which are to be used in those months are Vishnu in Chaitra, Aryama in Vaishakh, Vivasvaan in Jyeshtha, Divakar in Ashadh, Parjanya in Shravan, Varun in Bhadrpad, Martand in Ashwin, Bhargav in Kartik, Mitr in Margshirsh, Poosha in Paush, Bhag in Magh, Tvashta in Phalgun.

Arksamputika: In the month of Phalgun, Shukla paksh, Saptami this vrat should be done. On Shashthi observe upvaas / fast and perform poojan of Surya with fragrance, Ark flowers, dhoop, guggal, white Karveer flowers and chandan. In naivedya offer water mixed with jaggery. At night keep awake and perform japa of surya gayatri mantra.

Om! Bhaskaraye Vidmahe Sahasrarashmim Dhi Mahi, Tannh Suryah Prachodayat.”

Do not use Kulthi, Masoor, Saem, Badi, Urad daal or any other sour thing. Collect Ark leaf and do their poojan chanting Om! Khakholkaye Namah”. After doing Surya poojan with ark flowers , arrange Brahmin bhojan. Keep repeating the mantra “Arko Me Priytaam.” Prepare arkput with the mantra, facing East just swallow it without touching lips and teeth. Do prashan with Ark Samput.

Om! Arksamput Bhadram Te Subhadram Me-astu Vai Sada, Mamaapi Kuru Bhadram Vai Prashnaad Vitado bhav.”

Do like this on all saptamis throught out the year. This will help establish Luxami, goddess of wealth in the family for a period of seven generations.

     Marich Saptami Vratt: Observed on Shukla paksh saptami of Chaitra month. Observe fast on Shashthi and perform poojan of Surya as per the saur dharma. Here the mahabali surya mantra is Om Vam Phat”. Repeat this mantra time and again. In one year one attains darshan of Bhaskar. In the end getting free of all the mental anguishes and death one goes to the realm of Sun.

      On this day perform poojan with Saur mantra and mudras ( Kinkani, Vyom, Astra, Padmini, Arkani, Jwalini, Tejani, Gabhistani, Shankhani, Surya Vaktra, Sahasrkirna, Udya, Madhyama, Astmani, Malini, Tarjani and Kumbhmudra). Offer food to Brahmins and one should eat afterwards observing silence. Before eating pray to Marich with following:

      “Om! Khakholkaye Swaha, Priyyataam Priyasangado Bhav Swaha” . Doing like this one immediately gains company of the favorite person. If done for one year separation from son never occurs.

Nimb Saptami: Meditate on the form of Surya which is having a bow, Conch, Chakra and Mace in his four hands. Do poojan. Eat Neemb  leafs. Mantra used in poojan is Om! Khakholkaye Namah and Gayatri used in this is Om! Adityaye Vidmahe, Vishwabhagaye Dhi Mahi, Tannah Surya Prachodayaat.

      For poojan prepare an eight petal led lotus, and perform avahan of Sun in the middle. Do poojan of his head in the N-E petal, his eyes in Eastern petal, his heart in S-East petal, his shikha in S-west petal, Rahu and Kuber in Northern petal, Som and Ishwar in the N-East petal, Indra and Mangal in Eastern petal, Mercury and Agni in the South East petal, Brihaspati and Yam in Southern petal, Venus and Ancestors in South Western petal, Varun and Saturn in the western petal, Air and Ketu in the North Western petal. Bath Surya on the lotus. Establish Sidhi, Vrishi, Smriti, Utpal Malini, Shri on your right hand side. In your north near the lord Surya establish Pragyawati, Vibha, Harita, Budhi, Ridhi, Visrishti, Paurnmasi, Vibhawari and perform their poojans. Offer prayers to the neemb with “Tvam Nimb Katukatmasi Aditya Nilyastatha, Sarv rog Harah Shanto Bhav Me Prashnam Sada”. And lace it in front of the Surya. Then do prahsan and japa of the mantra sitting in front of the lord. Offer bhojan to the Brahmins as per ones means and give dakshina. Afterwards eat food without salt keeping silent. On is freed of all kinds of diseases.

      Phal Saptami: Perform fast on Bhadrpad Shukla Saptami and poojan of Sun. On ashtami have bath and again do poojan of diwakar. Offer Dates, Matulung(bijaura), mangoes, which have already been offered to Sun saying Martandah Priyataam. One should eat all the above things oneself also saying Sarve Bhawantu Safala mam Kamah Samantatah. Do it for one year. Progeny are also blessed with further children.

       Certain benefits of planting trees:
      
    Ashok tree – no distress; Plaksh(pakad) – Best woman received; Bilv Tree – Long life; Jamun- Luxmi; Vanjul(Tinish)- increase of intelligence and power; Mango tree – Desired thing received; Mahua or Arjun tree – Grants grains; Imli tree- spoils the dharma; Kathal – causes loss of intelligence; Shisham/ Arjun/ Jayanti/ Karveer/ Bel/ Palash- attains heaven; Tendu tree-increase in the family; Pomegranate-female comforts; Bakul tree- removes sins; Beetle nut tree – grants Sidhi, Kadamb-grants great wealth; Kesar(saffron) – Enemies killed.
     
       If trees are planted with proper procedures one gets comforts of heaven and sins of three lives are removed.
    100 tree plantations give heaven; 1000 tree plantation gives form like Vishnu. Vaishakh month is best for planting trees while Jayeshtha is not propitious. Ashadh, Shravan and Bhadrpad are best; Ashvin, Kartik just kills them. Mango tree spreads great if it is fed with honey. In peepal tree, its said upto the place where its shadow spreads that much space is holy like river Ganges.

   Chatuvidh month: Observed in four months, Chandra, Saurya, Savan and Nakshatra. From the shukla pratipada to Amvasya is Chandramaas; from one sankranti to another sankranti is Suryamaas; from any tithi to tithi which comes after further 30 days is called Savanmass and from Sun rise to sun rise is called Savan day; one day night is called Ahoratra and 30th part of a rashi is called Saur day. Whar ever bhog is done is called Chandra day.

    Mantropasana, Annprashan, Prayshchit, Yajna, for collection of tax by the ruler-Savan month is best. For marriage, Yajna-vratt, special bath etc- Saur month is best; for Ashtaka shradh, ordinary shradh, religious works, Parvan shradh- Chandra maas is best; Som and Pitr poojans or such things should be completed during Nakshatra mass.

     In the thirty days when there are no sankrantis, it is called Mall maas or Adhik maas. This comes generally after two and a half years. All kinds of Sapindan kriyas and prêt kriyas are performed during this time. Yajnas and marriage etc are not performed during this time. Mantropasana, upnayan(yagyopveet) sanskaar, start of Vratt, new house building work, entry in to a new house are all strictly NOT to be undertaken during this time.

     During the month of Karkit a great person will be born from the yajna kund who will be follower of path of truth and his name would be Satyayug. On this day whosoever will perform poojan of any devta under the shade of Amla tree, that particular devta will be under control of that person. This tithi is famous by the name Akshaya Navmi. Under the Amla tree if one who establishes Tulsi & Malti and performs poojan of Shalagram, his  ancestors will get fully satisfied and he himself will be jivan mukt.

      A shradh performed under the Amla tree is equal in fruit to thousands of shradhs performed at Gaya; A yajna performed under Amla tree gives fruit of thousands of yajnas. Such a person after death goes to heavens with all his family persons.

      Kokila Vratt: During the month of Ashadh poornima in the evening time do sankalp that till Sravan month I will take daily bath, eat only at night, sleep through out the period on floor, maintain celibacy, and will pity the needy. Getting up in the morning brush teeth, bath using paste of  fragrant material i.e. Sesame seeds, Amla etc. Do like this for eight days continuously. Rest of the days of vratt,  use ‘Vach’ ubtan for bath.
    
    Make a past of sesame seeds and make a form of Cuckoo (Kokila) bird. Perform its poojan with Red chandan, Champa flowers, Patra, Dhoop, Deep, Naivedya, Rice, Sesame seeds, Durva etc. repeating the follwing mantra,
      
      Tilsahe Tilsaukhye Tilvarne Tilpriye, Saubhagyadravyaputranshch Dehi Me Kokile Namah.

      Pray for good fortune, male progeny and wealth. After doing pooja like this, one should come back home and take food. Do like this for one month and at the end of it make eyes of it (kokila) with precious stones and feathers with gold and put it on a copper plate. Add dakshina, clothes, jaggery, grains etc to it and offer it to ones father-in-law or ones family purohit or any daivagya Brahmin.
   
    This is very good vratt for ladies. One achieves great fortune, children, comforts and joys by the grace of Shatrughan.
    
    Brihtapo Vratt: During the month of Ashwin, Poornima undertake fasting during the day and eat kheer with ghee at night only.
      
      Next day after doing brushing with Bilv datum and taking bath, pray to Mahadev as follows,
    
      Aham Devvratamidam Kartumichami Shashwatam, Tavagyaya Mahadev Yatha Nirvahte Kuru.
          
     This vrat is done for 16 years. Then on Pratipada of Margshirsh again fast by taking instructions from ones guru and perform Shiv poojan. Offer food to sixteen shiva bhakt brahmins or 8 brahmin couples. If it is beyond ones reach to provide food for so many then one may offer food to only one Brahmin couple.
      
     One should remain without food and sleep on the floor during the vratt days. After early morning bath, gather all the material and give bath to Shankarji. Use udvartan, Panchgavya, Panchamrit, water mixed with sesame seeds and warm water for bath of Shiva. Offer Karpoor, Chandan anointing, also offer Lotus flowers, clothes, flags, Vitaal, dhoop, deep, bell and naivedya also. Light up afire and offer ahutis in the agni.

      Use panchgavya for prashan. Offer food to acharya and also eat food with all the relatives sitting silent. Offer gold, clothes etc. to Brahmins and seek their pardon. If a person has not enough to give he should offer just flowers and water to the Brahmins. One should do every month on pratipada starting with Kartik month. Parana should be done in the sixteenth year. Offer ornaments and clothes to 16 brahmins as per ones capacity. Also offer food to poor and destitutes.
      
     As a result of this vratt one attains many great higher realms, it is a ladder to heavens for all the four varnas of people Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishaya and Kshudra. A woman will always be with her husband, if she is a widow then in future she will never be a widow again, one will receive wealth, long life, beautiful body and good fortune. This is good for both men and women.

     Jatismar Vratt: Meaning of jatismar is that person who remembers his past lives. It is observed in one full year. There are four parts of three months each and are called PAD. First paad is started from Margshirsh, shukla paksh etc. three months and is called Vishnupad. It provides all the dharma related kriyas. From Phalgun shukla , three months hence is second pad called Tripushkar pad and it is good for Tapsya and Luxmi sadhana. From Jyeshtha Shukla paksh to next three months is called Trirang and is granter of valour and truth. From Bhadra Shukla paksh onward comes the fourth pad of this vrat and is called trirang. It is good for knowledge seeking. 

During the month of Margshirsh four tithes are best, Dwitya, Tritya, Chaturthi and Panchami. On the first day keeping ones senses under control observe Ekbhukt vratt. On dwitya after getting free from nityaakarma,perform poojan of lord with the name of Krishan. Perform poojan of lords lotus feet with best flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya etc. and at night on rising of Chandra or moon perform poojan of Moo with name of Shashi using Chandan, Agar, Karpoor, Dadhi, Durva, Akshat, various precious stones, fruits and flowers. Every day as the moon size increases keep increasing the quantity of Arghya also.  At madhyan apply a mixture of loose earth and gomaya one ones body and take bath. Use for mantra for applying the mixture on ones body,

“Tvam Mritsane Vandita Devaih Samlairdaityghatibhih, Myapi Vandita Bhaktya Mamto Vimlam kuru.”

O Mritike, you are prayed to by all the Devtas who kill all the rakshas. I also with all bhakti do your poojan, please cleanse me too.

Move towards the river apply paste of white mustard seeds, black sesame seeds, Vach and various medicinal plants. Make a mandal over the water surface and chant the following mantra,

Tvamadih Sarvdevanaam Jagtaam Ch Jaganmaye, Bhutanam Veerudhaam Chaiv Rasnaam Patye Namah, Gangasagarjam Toyam Paushkaram Narmadam Tatha, Yamunm Sanihityam Ch Sanidhanmihastu Me.

Take snan, wear fresh clothes and perform sandhya-vandan. Return to your house and remain in your house and do not talk to anyone till moon arises.

Repeat same procedure for all the other tithes of tritiya, Chaturthi and Panchami also but change the name of lord to Achut, Anant and Hrishikesh respectively while names used for chandrma should be Chandra, Shashank and Indu. For offering arghya to Chandra following mantra should be used,

“Navo Navoasi Masante Jayamanah Punah Punah, Triragnisamvetaan Vai Devanapyayase Havih, Gaganagansaddip Dugdhabdhimathanodbhava, Bhabhasitdigabhog Ramanuj Namoastu te.”

“Hey Ramanuj, at the end of every month you appear in ever new forms. Through three agnis you alone provide nourishment to all the devtas. You came out of the churning of the great ocean. All the directions are lighted up with your effulgence. In the courtyard of space you are like a lighted Deepak. I bow down to you.”
After offering argh to moon give that argha to Brahmins. Spread Ashok or Palash leafs on the ground and pray to mother earth with following mantra,

“Tavtale Bhoktukamoaham Devi Sarvrasodbhave, Madanugrhaye Suswadam kurvannammritopmam.” O Prithi Devi, with you as the base I want to eat this food. Please bless me and make this food tasty like nectar.

Then sitting on the lotus leaf on ground and putting the food of shak and pakvaan on the Ashok leaf, eat in silence. After food do achman and touch various body parts, meditate on moon, sleep on floor.  On Dwitya use saltless havishyaan, on Tritiya use Tinni (Nivaar), on Chaturthi things made out of cows milk alone should be used. On Panchami use Khichari. During this vratt Sanva, rice, cow milk ghee, fruits received from jungle are considered good. After morning snan, do tarpan of Pitras, offer food to Brahmins, give dakshina to them. In the end eat food with your family, relatives and friends. One who observes these four vrats for three three months in a year, Chandra dev get happy with him and provides Shri and Victory to him. A girl who observes this gets good husband. Durbhaga woman becomes saubhagyawati (good fortune). One who desires kingship gets kingship, one who desired knowledge gets knowledge. Women gets married into a good family, she gets beautiful bed, grains, asan and transport. She along with her husband, children, and wealth gets knowledge of her previous births.

Yamdwtiya: During the month of Kartik, shukla paksh on dwitya, yamuna served food to her brother yam in her house and a great festival was celebrated in the realm of Yam, hence this tithi is called Yamdwitiya. Hence on this day all brothers should not eat at their own place but at their sister’s place giving some gifts to he to make her happy. If one does not have a sister then go to the house of daughter of fathers brother, sisters brothers daughter, mothers sisters house or fathers sisters house. A person who on this day eats food prepared by his sister is granted repute, long life, dharma, artha and many comforts.

Ashunyashayan: It is observed in the shravan month, krishan paksh dwitya. By observing this women can not become widows and men widowers and enjoy all kinds of comforts.

Perform poojan of Lord Vishnu along with Luxmi on bed with various things. On this day observe vratt, naktvratt and ayachit vratt. On the day of vratt offer argh of curd, Akshat, Kand mool, fruits, flowers, water in golden utensil to moon with following mantra,

Gaganagansambhoot Dugdhabdhimathnodbhava, Bhabhasitdigabhoga Ramanuj Namoastu te.

One should do like this four months and because of it one will never be separated from ones partner. A woman will not experience widowhood for three lives if she observes this vrat with bhakti.

Madhuk Tritiya: Madhuk tree also came out of the great ocean churning. This tree which is provider of all kinds of good fortunes and remover of various kinds of mental and physical anguishes was plated on earth. Gauri along with Jaya and Vijaya sat under it. On seeing them with it, all  devis and devtas did their poojan with it and Gauri thus pleased blessed them with various desires.

During Phalgun, shukla, tritiya one should go to madhu van and sit under a madhuk tree meditating on Parvati who is meditating herself on rudra and is adorned with a mukut, sitting on chariot of Godha perform her poojan with dhoop, deep, flowers, red chandan, kesar, gold, manikya and sweet things. Pray to her as follows,

“Om Bhushita Devbhoosha ch Bhooshika Lalita Uma, Tapovanrata Gauri Saubhagyam me Prayachtu, Daurbhgyam me Shamyatu Suprasann manah Sada, Avaidhavyam Kule janm Dadaatvparjanmani.” O Gauri, you names are Lalita and Uma. You are an ornament for the devtas and adorn all with ornaments and you yourself are also wearing same. Please bless me with good fortune. Please remove all of my misfortunes. This good fortune should continue for the next life also and you should always be happy and pleased with me.

Then offering flowers, Jeerak, salt, Jaggery, Ghee, garlands, Kumkum, Gandh, Agar, Chandan, Sindoor, clothes and kajal, pua, Sesame seeds perform pooja of Madhuk tree. After doing circumambulation of the Brahmins offer them dakshina. A girl who observes this vratt, she gets a huband like Vishnu himself in all the three lokas. She will become disease free, blessed with beautiful gaze, beautiful body and live for one hundred years. In the end she will go to the realm of Rudra in a plane adorned with bells.

Meghpali Tritiya: it is observed in Ashwin month, Krishan paksh, and tritiya is done both by men and women. This should be observed by all who desire Sad-dharma. Offer arghya with (Yav, Godhoom, Dhan, Til, Kangu, Shyamak, Chana)  and sprouted Godhoom or pandas made of til –tandul. Meghpali is a vine with leafs and manjeer. It is often found in the villages, by roadsides or in mountains. Businessmen offer prayers to it with grains, Oil, Jaggery, Kumkum, Gold and pad (umbrella, shoes, cloth, ring, kamandalu, asan, utensils and eatables). One who gives argha to the tree gets free of the effect of all the wrong deeds performed unknowingly. On should also offer fruits, gandh, flowers, akshat/rice, coconut, dates, pomegranate, dhoop, curd, deep and newly sprouted dhaan. Offer cloth and Abir and the offer argha. Later that arghya should be offered to learned Brahmins.

By this vratt one gets a life span of one hundred years, in blessed with aishwarya and in the end boards a plane a goes to the realm of Vishnu. One surely transfers his family members from hell to heaven by the dint of this vratt. One who offers argh to Meghpali out of fear of hell, his sins are burnt in the same way as Sun annihilates darkness.

Achala Saptami: It is said that once in the kingdom of Magadh there lived a prostitute by the name of Indumati who was very beautiful. One day she felt fed up of the world and went to the ashram of sage Vashishtha and asked him to tell her some vratt by which she could be elevated. She was told to follow the following rule.

Take bath on the saptami of Magh month as it gives beautiful body in the world and after wards provides sadgati. On shashthi eat once only, on saptami go near a river where no one has taken bath yet and water has not been stirred by people yet. After bath give daan. She observed this rule and after some time when she left her body she was transported to the realm of Indra and became the main dancing apsara there.

It is said that on saptami perform ekbhukt vratt and in the morning do poojan of Surya dev. On saptami in the morning go to a river and have bath during arunodaya vela. Light a Deepak of sesame seed oil with a red coloured bati/wick ( coloured in Kusumbh) in a golden, silver or copper patra. Put it on your head and pray to Surya as follows,

Namaste Rudraroopay Rasanaampatye Namah, Varunay Namaste Astu Harivaas Namoastu Te,
Yavad Janam Kritam Papam Maya Janamsu Saptsu, Tanme Rogam Ch Shokam Ch Makari Hantum Saptami,
Janani Sarvbhootanaam Saptami saptsaptike, Sarvyadhihare Devi Namaaste Ravimandale.

Then float the Deepak on water. After bath perform tarpan of Devta and pitras and make an eight petalled lotus out of chandan. In the middle of it establish Shiv and Parvati and do their poojan with pranav mantra. In the eight petals perform poojan of Bhanu, Ravi, Vivaswaan, Bhaskar, Savita, Ark, Sahasrkiran, Sarvatma. Before each name put OM and after it put Namah, thus mantra will become Om Bhanve Namah etc. After this saying Svasthanam Gamyataam, perform visarjan of Surya. Then in a patra of copper or mud, filled with jaggery, sesame seeds, ghee, a golden leaf and an ornament for ears, cover it with red cloth, perform its poojan and give it to Brahmin for annihilation of all ill fate and pains. Then pray to lord Surya that he should pleased with me who is having children, cattle and servants. Then offer clothes, sesame seeds, cow and dakshina to guru also. Offer food to brahmins as per ones capacity. 


ASHTAMI:

As per Vrah Puran, at one time Andhakasur became very powerful and devtas could not defeat him. So they went to Brahma and explained their problem. Brahma along with them again went to Lord Shiva at Kailash. All the asuras (Rakshas) followed Devtas and Brahma to Kailash and started thinking of abducting mother Parvati.

A fierce battle took place. Devtas started getting tired of fighting and started leaving the battle field. So Shiva started fighting Andhakasur himself and hit the asura with his trident. Blood started oozing out of his body. As it fell on the ground new Andhakasurs got born out of it. Seeing this , Shiv pieced his chest with his trident and lifted him and started dancing like that but still blood kept falling on the ground and new asuras kept getting generated. Then Shankar got very angry and he along with others generated 8 shaktis or powers, namely Brahmi, Kaumari, Vaishanavi. Vararhi, Yami, Yogeshwari, Maheshwari and Mahendri. From them only Kaam, Krodh, lobh, moh, Matsarya, Paushunya, Asuya etc. shaktis were born. They dried up the blood flow of Andhakasur. This was the date of Ashtami and hence it was given to these eight Matrikas only.

Budhhashtami Vratt: At the start of Satyug Mau’s son IL, who was always surrounded by friends and servants, went to jungle chasing a deer. When he reached inside the jungle he got converted in to female. That area belonged to Shiva and Parvati and no other male could enter that space without changing in to a female. Thus as per the power of Shiva’s rule IL also became a woman. He could not understand where he has come. At that Moon’s beautiful son Budh also came to that jungle. He saw IL in the form of a woman and liked her very much. He married her and a son was born to Budh from her who was named Pururava. Thus from Pururava chandravansh lineage started. The day Budh married IL that was Ashtami. Hence this date became popular. On this day all sins are condoned.

Observe Ekbhukt vratt on the shukla paksha Ashtami. Take bath in a river and fill a new kalash with water and establish in house. Put some gold in it and put some cooked food in a cup etc. made out of cane. This vratt should be observed for 8 Wednesday’s. Different cooked food to be used for these  days should be Laddu1, ghee apoop2, Vatak3, things made out of white kasaar4, Sohalak5 ( Ashokvartika made out of khand), Frutis6 , Flowers7, Feni8 respectively. Offer these things to Budha and later eat it with friends and also listen to the story of Budhashtami. Do not eat food without listening to the story.

Make a statue of Budha of one or half masha gold and perform its poojan with dhoop, deep, flowers, yellow clothes, naivedya and dakshina. Use following mantras for the poojan,

Om! Budhaye Namah, Om! Somatmajaya Namah, Om! Dur Budhinaashnaye Namah, Om! Subudhi Pradaye Namah, Om! Tarajataye Namah, Om! Sauyma Grahaye Namah , Sarvsaukhya Pradayaye Namah. Chanting the following mantra offer the food items and statue to Brahmins in daan,
Om! Budhoayam Pratigrihnatu Dravayasthoayam Budhah Svayam,
Diyate Budhrajay Tushataam Ch Budho Namah.

Brahmin should also chant following mantra while receiving the statue,

Budhah Saumastaarkeyo Rajputra Elapatih, Kumaro Dwijrajasya Yah Puruvasah Pita,
Durbudhibodhduritam Nashyitvavayorbudhah, Saukhyam Ch Saumnasyam Ch Karotu Shashinandanam.

One who observes this vratt remembers his past for seven lives. He gets grains, wealth, children and grand children, long life and all the comforts in this life and in the end remembering Narayan he leaves his body in a sacred place and ascends to heavens. One who tells this to others he is absolved of the sin of brahmhatya even.

Krishan Janmashtami Vratt: When Kamsa was killed in Mathura, Devki took Srikrishana in her lap and wept. At that time both Vasudevji and Devki were happy and embraced both of their sons Krishana and Baldev. On seeing them so happy many people came to them. They told Srikrishna that we are very happy that you killed Kamsa. Please let us know your birth date so that we may celebrate it always. At that time Lord Krishana told them that his birth happened during the  month of Bhadrapad, Krishan Paksh, Ashtami tithi at midnight. At this time Sun is on Singh rashi and moon is on Vrish rashi. By observing this vratt peace will prevail in the world and every one will be disease free and happy. Sins of seven lives are absolved by the power of this vratt.

Get up in the morning and after brushing teeth take sankalp of it. At madhyahn take bath, and prepare a room for Devi to give birth of Krishna. Adorn it various embellishments. Draw Swastik or such sacred marks on the walls. Guard the room with mace, sword, black goat and also establish Shashthi devi with naivedya etc. In the middle of the room put two statues, one of krishan and other of Devki in sleeping mudra. The statues can be of any material out of the eight written here, Gold, Silver, Copper, Peetal, Earthen material, Wood, Out of mani or a sketch. Krishna’s statue suckling his mother Devki should be established on the bed. Also establish a statue of Yashoda with her daughter there. Also make statues of all planets, Naags, Vidydhar and various devtas standing all around and throwing flowers. Vasudev should be made to stand outside the room with a sword etc. Vasudev is an avatar pf Maharshi Kshyap and Devki is avatar of Mata Aditi while Baldev is avatar of Shesh naag. Nandbaba is avatar of Dakshprajapati, Yashoda of Diti, Gargmuni is Brahma’s avatar. Kamsa was avtaar of Kaalnemi. Guards of Kamsa should be sketched all around the room in sleeping posture. Also draw elephants, cows and dancing Apsaraas along with Gandharwas all around. On one side show Kaliya naag on the heart of Yamuna. Then offer prayers to Mata Devki, with gandh, flowers, deep, dhoop, naivedya, akshat, cocnut, dadim, kakdi, beejpur, supari(beetle nut), Narangi and Kathal (Panas), “ O Mother all around whom kinners etc are singing praises while playing various musical instruments, whom muni ganas are serving with abhishek, chanwar, mirror and mangalmaya Kalash, who is the mother of Lord Krishna and is established on the beautiful bed, praise be to that Devi who is mother of all devas, and is of beautiful body.”

Then meditate on Luxmi devi sitting on a lotus pressing her feet. Do poojan of Luxmi with “ Namo Devyaii Mahadevyai Shivayai Satatam Namah”. Then do poojan of other with Om! Devakyai Namah, Om! Vasudevaye Namah, Om! Balbhadraye Namah, Om! Subhadraye Namah, Om! Nandaye Namah, Om! Yashodaye Namah respectively. Some people offer arghya to moon as it arises and then meditate on Hari with following mantra,

Angham Vamanam Shaurim Vaikuntham Purshottamam, Vasudevam Hrishikesham Madhawam Madhusoodanam, Varaham Pundrikaksham Nrisingham Brahman Priyam, Damodaram Padmnabham Keshwam Garudadhwajam, Govindam Achutam Krishnam Anantam Parajitam, Adhokshajam Jagadbeejam Sargsthityantkaarnam, Anadi Nidhnam Trailokyesham Trivikrama, Narayanam Chaturbahum Shankhchakragadadharam, Pitambardharam Nityam Vanmalavibhushitam, Srivatsankam Jagat setum Sri Dharam Shripatim Harim.

After this bath to the statue meditating on the Lord Krishna with following mantra,

“Yogeshwaraye Yogsambhavaye Yogpatye Govindaye Namo Namah”. Then anoint the statue with sloka, “ Yagyeshwaraye Yagyasambhavay Yagyapatye Govindaye”, offer naivedya with, “Vishwaya Vishveshwaraya Vishwasambhawaya Vishwapatye Govindaye Namo Namah”.  Offer deep with the mantra, “ Dharmeshwaraya Dharmpatye Dharmsambhavaya Govindaaya Namo Namah”.

Similarly perform poojan of Chandra-Rohini, Vasudev-Devki, Nand-Yashoda and Baldev on the vedi. All sins will be removed by it. In the evening when moon comes out offer argh to it with following mantra,
“Ksheerodarnv Sambhoota Attrinetrasamudbhava, Grihanarghyam Shshaankendo Rohinya Sahito Mama”. At mid night give Vasordhara ahuti with jaggery and ghee. At that time giving of names to children etc. should also be done. On navami observe celebration for bhagwati also.  After that offer food to Brahmins saying Krishno Me Priyataam. Give them dakshina saying, “ Yam Devam Devki Devi Vasudevadajijanat, Bhaumasya Brahmano Guptyai Tasmai Brahmatmane Namah”.

After this let the Brahmins leave the place and they should say, “Shantirastu Shivam Cha Astu”. Men and women who observe this vratt every year is blessed with children, grand children, disease free body, grains and wealth, long life, kingdom etc. Area where such vratt is observed rains fall at correct time, untimely deaths do not occur, people live peacefully. One who does observe this for even one time goes to the realm of Lord Vishnu after enjoying everything in this life.

Durva Ashtami Vratt :  It is observed on the Shukla paksh Ashtami of Bhadrapad month. One who observes this vratt his lineage is never annihilated.

When devtas started the churning of great ocean for Nactar and used Sumeru mountain which was placed on the thigh of Lord Vishnu. When it moved it removed some of the hair on his and through water they landed on earth. Out of them beautiful gree durva took birth. When nectar appeared through the churning, devtas placed the pot over durva and hence it became eternal. It became sacred and devotional for all the devtas. They did its pooja with dhoop, deep, flowers, naivedya, gandh, dates , cocnut, draksha, kapitha, Narang, Mangoes, Beejpur, Dadim along with curd, akshat and garlands chanting following mantras,

“Tvam durvemritjanamasi Vandita Ch Surasurayih, Saubhagyam Santitam KritvaSarvkaryakari Bhava, Yatha Shakhaprashakhabhir vistritasi Mahitale, Tatha Mamaapi Santanam Dehi Tvamjaramare”.

Perform poojan of devta couples along with apsaras. Any woman who after taking bath, wearing fresh clothes perform durva poojan and offers tilpishti, Godhum, saptdhanya(satnaja) along with food to Brahmins she is blessed with children, wealth, good fortune in this world and in the end along with her husband goes to heavens and resides there till the end of creation.

Masic Krishanashtami Vratt: For the removal of all the sins and mukti from all kinds of fear this vratt is observed. It pleases lord Shiv. It is started during the month of Margshirsh, krishan paksh Ashtami tithi. With Gurus permission, on this day laying aside ones anger and with full control over ones senses observe a fast. At madhyan have a bath in river and then do poojan of shivling with dhoop, deep, flowers, guggal, gandh, naivedya and tambul. During the whole month perform shiv poojan and at night sleep on floor after drinking gaumootr. Perform this all the twelve months and in the end offer ghee, kheer, food, gold, clothes to Brahmins happily. Offer 12 pots full of black sesame seeds, umbrella, milk giving black coloured cow offer to Mahadev.

Every month different name for poojan of the lord and different material for prashan is used. During Paush use Shambhu name, ghee for prashan, fruit of Vajpaye yajna received. During Magh use Maheshwar name, cows milk for prashan, fruit of many yajna received. During the month of Phalgun use Mahadev, sesame seeds for prashan, fruit of eight Rajsooya yajnas received. During Chaitra use Sthanu name, Yav bhojan, fruit of Ashwamedha yajna received. During Vaishakh use Shiv name, Kushodak for prashan, fruit of ten Purushmedh yajna received. During Jyeshtha use Pashupati name, Gaushringjal for prashan, fruit of 100000 gaudaan received. During Ashadh use Ugra name, Gomaya for prashan, fruit of staying for more than one million years in the realm of Shiva. During Shravan use Sharv name, Ark for prashan, fruit of a yajna in which gold is offered is received. During Bhadrpad use Triyambak name, eat bilv patra, fruit of offering grains is received. Ashwin use Bhav name, Tandulodak for prashan, fruit of 100 Pundareek yajna is received. During Kartik use Rudra name, cows milk curd for prashan, fruit of Agnishtom yajna received.
Any woman who observes this vratt goes to the realm of Shiva in a plane praised by devtas. Resides there till the end of kalp.

Somashtami Vratt: It is observed during shukla paksh when Monday and Ashtami both fall on the same time. Prepare a statue which is half Shiv and half Parvati. Anoint the Shiva with white chandan and Parvati with kumkum. Put white clothes on Shiv and red clothes on Parvati. Offer white and red flowers and offer naivedya prepared in ghee. Perform arti of the statue with 25 deepaks. Fast on this day. Next day after performing poojan in the same way, do havan with sesame seeds and ghee and offer food to Brahmins along with two clothes, flags, bell, dhoop holder, deepmala, various articles used during pooja ( like aartti pot, dhoop holder, argya patra etc.)  Offer them clothes and ornaments and do their poojan with 25 deepaks. One should do it for five years, else even one year. By the dint of it one resides in the Shiv loka. One who does it whole life any kind of obstruction, anguish, fever can not stand in front of him. Same vratt can be observed during Sunday Ashtami also.     

NAVMI:

As per Vrah Puran, King Sindhudweep was doing difficult tapasya. He wanted to kill Indra. In his last life he was son Namuchi of Vishwakarma. He was head of the Asuras and could not be killed by any kind of armament. Earlier Indra had killed hi with froth of the sea and hence he wanted to Indra. He was doing tapasya sitting one asan only. Then river Vaitravati ( Betava) of the central land came to him in the form of a beautiful girl. He accepted her and she gave birth to Vetrasur. He was very powerful from his childhood itself. He won over whole of the earth and attacked devtas. Yam, Agni, Indra, Varun, Vayu all fearing him ran to Shankar at mount Kailash. From their all of them went to Brahma. Brahma generated an eight armed Devi which fought with all the asuras for 1000 years. In the end she killed the asuras and devtas got happy. She was holding conch, mace, Chakra, Paash(noose), Sword, Bell, Bow and Shakti in her eight hands. She alone also killed Mahishasur later on. She went to Himalayas and started living there happily as “Nanda Devi”. Since she appeared on navami, this tithi was given to her.

Vriksh Navmi Vratt: During churning of the great ocean many things came out of it and one of it was Luxmi. Both Devas and asuras wanted it. After getting out of the ocean she took shelter under a bilv tree for some time and hence bilv tree is also called Shri Vriksh.In the month of Bhadrapad, Shukla paksh navmi this Vratt is observed. During sun rise with great devotion poojan of this tree is done with gandh, flowers, dhoop, deep, fruits, clothes, tilpishti, grains, godhoom and garlands. Following mantra is used for this poojan,

Shri Niwas Namaste Astu Shri Vriksha Shiv Vallabhaa, Mam Abhilisham Kritva Sarv Vighnharo Bhav. Then secen cicumambulations of the tree are done and one bows down to it. After this food is offered to Brahmins saying ‘Shridevi Priyantaam’  and then one should eat food made without oil and salt, also it should not be cooked on fire observing silence. It should be eaten in earthen utencils. One may also take fruits and flowers along with it. One who dies poojan of Bilv tree like this gets everything in life.

Dhwaj Navmi Vratt: After the killing of Mahishasur by Devi Durga, all the asuras fought many times against the devtas. Bhagwati Durga also took many forms to save the devtas many times. Once Mahishasur’s son Raktasur started a very hard penance. He took a boon from Brahma that he will rule all the three worlds. Keeping this in  mind, he gathered all the asuras together and planned together to attack the devtas. With mighty warriors under him they al attacked the devtas and a fierce battle raged. Since they were very powerful, they defeated devtas and Raktasur ruled Indras city Amravati. Thus defeated all the devtas went to the city of Bhagwati called Karchatrapuri where devi Durga resided. Chamunda also was with her. They praised her , Mahaluxmi, Kshemkari, Shivdooti, Maharunda, Bhramari, Chandramangala, Revti and Harsidhi and told everything. They requested her intervention to safe guard their interests.

Listening to their requests, devi along with her shaktis challenged all the asuras and defeated them and also killed Raktasur on this tithi of Navmi. All the devtas got very happy and celebrated the victory in the city of Karchatrapur by decorating it with flags and such things.

During the month of Paush, shukla paksha navmi, taking bath in the morning, make sankalp of fast on that day and gather fresh flowers to perform poojan of devi who is astride a lion. Offer dhoop, deep, malti flowers, gandh, naivedya, Chandan, different fruits, clothes and garlands. Also offer food which ahs not been cooked on fire with following sloka,

Rudram Bhagwati Krishnam, Graham Nakshatra Malinim,
Prapanno Aham Shivaam Ratrim, Sarvshatrokshayamkareem. 

Then offer food to Kumaris and devi bhaktas. Either one should observe full fast or Ekbhukt Vratt be observed. One who does poojan of devi offering flags etc on this day is set free of the fear of thieves, fire, water, enemies etc. After receiving all the comforts in this life at the end one goes to Veerlok.

Ulka Navmi Vratt: During Ashwin month, shukla paksh, navmi this Vratt is observed. In the orning after taking bath perform poojan of Pitri devi. Then with gandh, flowers, dhoop etc do poojan of Chamunda devi who is very dear to Bahirav. Pray to her with folded hands with following mantra,

Mahishagni Mahamaye, Chamunda Mundmalini,
Dravyamarogyavijayo Devi Devi Namostu Te. After this offer food to 7 or 5 or 1 kumari. Offer them blue blouse, ornaments, clothes and dakshina. Please the devi with devotion. Then sit on an asan smeared with cow dung. Keep all the food prepared in front and take some dry leaves and set them on fire. Till the time light of that fire remains finish your food. The moment the fire extinguishes stop eating food and do achman. Meditating on Chamunda in your heart perform all your daily household chores. Observe like this for one full year and at the end arrange kumari bhojan and offer clothes, ornaments to them and seek their pardon. Offer gold and cow to a Brahmin. One who does like this he is set fre of the fear of thieves, fire, enemies, kings, bhoot, prêt, pishach etc. and can never be attacked by armaments. Devi Chamunda guards him always. The observer becomes effulgent like ulka or meteorite.

DASHMI:

As per Vrah Puran, while doing creation Brahma started thinking about a base on which to build the whole creation. As he thought like this, ten powers came out of his ears. They were in the form of ten beautiful young girls and asked for areas to live in and also wanted husbands fit for them. So Brahma gave them the cosmic space of 100 crore yojan and asked them to occupy it. Thus they became the ten directions of the cosmos and occupied the areas. Brahma generated ten lokpals and married them to then Shaktis. Poorva was married to Indra, Paschima to Varun, Uttra to Kuber, Dakshina to Yam, Ishani to Shankar, Agneyidin to Agni, Nairitti to Nirritti, Vayavyidik to Vayu, Adho to Sheshnaag and Urdhava with himself.
As per Bhawishya puran, Bhrigu who was during Satyug had a beautiful wife totally devoted to him. To please him she would follow each and every instruction of her husband. At one time when all the asuras feared lord Vishnu very much they came to Bhrigu rishi and asked him to do something. Bhrigu went to Himalayas to do papaya to get sanding Vida with which any one could be brought back from dead. He wanted their king Bali to be victorious always. While he was away, Lord Vishnu attacked the asuras and started killing them. In twinkling of an eye he killed all the asuras with his chakra. On seeing this Bhrigu's wife Divya came fore to curse Vishnu. He cut her head also. When Rishi Bhrigu came back and heard everything, he got greatly annoyed with Vishnu and cursed him that you would also be born as a human ten times. Hence Vishnu is the only one who is born in different avatars on earth. Nine of these have already and tenth is awaited. These ten avatars are Matasya1, Kurma2, Varah3, Nrisingh4, Vaman5, Parshuram6, Shri Ram7, Krishna8, Budha9 and Kalki10.

O Lord, who is the savior of this whole world, is omnipresent and takes ten forms, O lord I have come in your refuge. Be pleased with me. O Janardan, please be pleased with my devotion. Please remove your vaishnavi maya and take me to your abode. I have offered my self to you. One who observes this vratt like this, gets free of the circle of life & death and in the end resides in the realm of Lord Vishnu.

Asha Dashmi Vratt: In the ancient times there lived a king by the name of Nal. He had a beautiful chaste wife by the name of Damyanti. Once while gambling with his brother, Nal lost whole of the kingdom. As a result he became penniless and went to jungles. In the deep jungles both husband and wife roamed around and sustained only on water as they could not locate anything to eat. One day, while Damyanti was asleep, Nal saw some golden birds. To catch them he threw his cloth on them. They flew away along with the cloth. Seeing this he went deep in to the jungle. When Damyanti woke up not finding her husband near started weeping loudly and ran here and there in that jungle. She acted like a mad woman. She reached a city by the name of Chedi. She roamed around in that city, children would gather round her some time in amazement. One day she was lying on the ground and her body was effulgent, when mother of the king saw her. She invited her to her palace. She put a condition that she would never eat any one’s leftover and she would never wash any one’s feet, as she is Sarandhri. No body in this kingdom would like to possess me and if any one tried he should be punished. Kings mother agreed to it and took her to her palace. She started living there. After living there for some time a Brahmin took her to her parent’s house. Though every one loved her there but still she felt lonely because of her husband. One day she asked a Brahmin named Daman to explain her some kind of Vratt by the power of which she may be able to get her husband back. Then that Brahmin explained this Vratt as follows for observation,

It can be observed during any month when shukla paksh is there and tenth tithi also on the same day. Take morning bath and perform dev poojan and at night do poojan of ten Ashadevis with flowers, chandan and alakt( red colour put on feet). Establish statues of all the ten direction devtas in the house along with their transports and armaments.  Do poojan of all of their ten shaktis powers. Offer separately Deepak, naivedya made out of ghee and fruits to them. Then pray to them for successful completion of one’s desire,

Ashahschasha Sada Santu Sidhyantam Me Manorathah,
Bhavtinam Prasadein Sada Kalyanamstivati.  

O Ashadevis, please fulfill my desires always and may with your grace my welfare be always taken care of.
Then offer food to Brahmins along with dakshina and then take food.   

EKADASHI:

As per Vrah Puran, when Brahma once was thinking or desiring of creation, Vaayu appeared from his mouth. It started flowing with great power and raised dust all around and rained. Then Brahma asked it to stop and take a form.  It came in to a form and appeared as Kuber. Brahma told him that all the wealth with devtas is just a fruit and you are appointed as its guard. Hence he was called  Dhanpati and Ekadashi tithi was goven to him.

Bheesham Panchak Vratt: It is started on Kartik Shukla ekadashi and is carried for five days up till Kartik Shukla poornmasi. During these five days one should abstain completely from telling lies, do Vishnu poojan and eat only shaak. A woman can also observe it with her husband’s permission. A widow can also observe it for the benefit of her children and grand children and moksha.

Whole kartik month one should do morning bath, daan, again bath at madhyaan and poojan of lord Vishnu. One should bath in a river with gomaya and perform tarpan of Devta, Rishi and Pitra with barley, rice and sesame seeds respectively. Bath lord Vishnu with honey, Milk, Ghee and water mixed with chandan. Also anoint him with panchgavya, saffron, Chandan and such fragrant materials. Burn a Deepak in front of him for five days continuously. After offering naivadya to him do 1800 jap of Om Namo Vasudevaya. Then perform havan with this mantra and in the evening do proper poojan again. Sleep on floor.
During first day do poojan of his feet with lotus flowers, second day of knees with bilv flowers, third day of navel with kevada flowers, fourth day of his chest with Japa flowers and on fifth day his face with Malti flowers.

Fasting like this one should do prashan with gomaya on ekadashi and gaumootr on dwadashi, with milk on trayodashi and with curd on chaturdashi. On panchami after bath do poojan of Keshav and offer food to brahmins with dakshina. Offer clothes and ornaments  puran-vachaks.    

This vrat removes all sins, even brahmhatya, gauhatya and gives sadgati after death. It can be done by all whether brahmchari, Grihastha, Vaanprastha or Sanyasi.

Rohini Chandra Vratt: It is observed in Shravan month, shukla paksh Ekadashi. Take bath in water mixed with various aushadhis( medicinal herbs). Then make 108 indurika with black daal flour and five modak (laddu). Go to sacred river and make a mandal with cow dung. Draw a sketch of Chandra and Rohini in it and perform their poojan with dhoop, deep, akshat, Naivedya etc and pray to them with following sloka,
Somraj Namastubhyam Rohinyae Te Namo Namah, Mahasati Mahadevi Sampadya Mamepsitam. Then saying Somo Me Priytaam and Devi Rohini Me Priyataam pooja things should be offered to a Brahmin. Then go in to the water up to waist level and eat all the indurikas. After coming out of the water give 
food to Brahmins and offer dakshina.

One who does like this every year, gets wealth and grains, sons and grand sons, leaves his body in a teerth, then goes to the realm of Brahma and then to Vishnu’s realm and then to realm of Rudra.

Bhishmpanchak Vratt: It is observed for five days during the month of Kartik, starting from Ekadashi and ending on Poornima. During this Vratt one should abstain from telling lies and other wrongful doings, should not kill animals, should only eat shaak during these five days. A woman can also observe it with permission from her husband. She also gets progeny and moksha in the end. One should take bath daily, then daan and again snan/bath at madhyaan in a sacred river, pool etc after smearing the body with gomaya. Then perform tarpan with water and sesame seeds of devtas and pitr. Give bath of Lord Vishnu with honey, milk, ghee and chandan. Anoint with Karpoor, Panchgavya, Kumkum, Chandan and other fragrant materials. Then light a Deepak in front of him which should remain burning continuously for five days. Offer naivedya to the lord and do japa of Om! Namo Vasudevaya and in the evening properly perform evening prayers. All these things should be done for five days.

In this Vratt during first day poojan of Lord’s FEET with LOTUS flowers is done.
On the second day poojan of his KNEES with BILV PATRA is performed.
On the third day poojan of his NAVEL area with flowers of KEVADA is performed.
On the fourth day poojan of his SHOULDERS with JAPA PUSHP is done.
On the fifth day poojan of his head with MALTI flowers is performed.
During this Vratt prashan of different things for various days is as follows,
On the 1st day with GOMAYA.
On the 2nd day with GAUMOOTRA.
On the 3rd day with MILK.
On the 4th day with CURD.
On the 5th day with perform poojan of Keshav and later offer dakshina to Brahmins. Also offer clothes and ornaments to those who give puran katha. At night first have panchgavya and then food made out of grains. Like this finish the Bhishampanchak Vratt. One observes this Vratt is absolved of the sins of Gauhatya and Brahmhatya and achieves good movement of the soul after death. Same Vratt was observed by Bhisham Pitamah while lying on the bed of spears in the battlefield of Mahabharat. 

DWADASHI:

As per vrah Puran all the mantra whether they are Vaidik or Tantrik, this shakti is in essence Lord Vishnu. Narayan is the ultimate Purusha. From him only to save the world Vishnu appeared. To remove ignorance air was given the form of conch, to cut the great circle of time, Chakra was granted, to annihilate the sins mace was provided and to raise all the bhootas Vaijyanti mala (garland) was given to him. Chandra appeared as Srivatsa symbol on his chest and Surya appeared as Kaustubh mani around his neck. Air being mightiest of all in movement appeared as Garud, Devi Luxmi who roamed around in all the three realms was also given to him. This dwadishi was given to Lord Vishnu.

Malldwadashi Vratt: Lord Krishna told Yodhishther that when he was eight years old then on the banks of Yamuna in the Bhandeer Van under a Banyan tree various wrestlers like Surbhadra, Mandleek, Yogvardhan, Yakshendrabhadra and other gops like Gopali, Dhanya, Vishakha, Dhyanishthika etc made me sit on a throne and did my poojan with various things. Then 308 wrestlers did my poojan with great devotion and great celebration were observed for pleasing me. Later they gave food and dakshina to Brahmins and did their poojan. From that very day this mall dwadashi is being celebrated. Whosoever observes this vratt he gets my grace, splendour, power, disease free body and ultimately comes to my realm.

This vratt is started on dwadashi of Shukla paksh during the month of Margshirsh and observed every month till the month of Kartik. Various names used for lord Vishnu during the poojan in these months are Keshav, Narayan, Madhav, Govind, Vishnu, Madhusudan, Trivikram, Vaman, Sridhar, Hrishikesh, Padmnabh and Damodar. Offer gandh, pushp, dhoop, deep, singing, playing of musical instruments and dancing with above names and saying “Krishno Me Priyataam.”

Bhimadwadashi Vratt: This was observed by king Bheema who was father of Damyanti and father in law of Nal. On inquiring from Brahmas son Pulastaya rishi about a vratt which can give respite from the pains of this world to everyone, this vratt was explained to him. It should be observed as follows.

Fast on dwadashi of Shukla paksh of Magh month. During good muhurt on this tithi make a mandap of 10 hast length and breadth. In the middle of it make vedi of five hast. Draw a mandal over the vedi and adorn it with five colours. Inside the mandap make 8 or 4 havan kund. In the karnika establish a four armed statue of the lord facing western direction. Perform its poojan with various things and by Brahmins. Put two stambh in front of the lord in ground and attach a third one across it.  Hang a golden, silver, Copper or earthen pot with thousand, hundred or one hole in it. Fill it up with water, milk and ghee. Offer ahutis for planets with palaash tree samidha, sesame seeds, ghee, kheer and leafs of Shami tree. In the north-east establish all the planets on a peeth and perform their poojan. Also do the poojan of dash dikpaals. Yajmaan should sit in front of the lord on a stool with kusha in his hand. Meditating on the lord yajmaan should take the lord with vasodhara falling on him on to his head. With following mantra,

Namaste Dev Devesha Namaste Bhuvneshwara, Vratenanen Mam Pahi Parmatman Namoastu Te. 

During this time Brahmins should be offering ahutis in all the four kundas with shanty adhyaya and Vishnu sukta. Blow conch, play musical instruments, sing praises of the lord. Next day yajmaan along with Brahmins should take bath in a sacred river. Then wearing white clothes one should offer argh to Bhaskar. Perform poojan of Purshottam with flowers, Dhoop, deep and in the end give poornahuti. Offer clothes, food, bedding, cow, ornamentsw to Brahmins and give dakshina and things especially to acharya.
One who observes this gets akhand good fortune for seven lives in the form of wealth, health, long life. After death one goes to the realms of Vishnu, Rudra and Brahma. Later on coming back to earth is born as a chakravarti king.

Madan Dwadashi Vratt: This vratt was observed by Diti to get a son from her husband Rishi Kashyap. It is observed during the chaitra month shuklapaksh dwadashi. Take a pot without any hole in it. Fill it up with white rice and anoint it with white chandan. Cover it up with two pieces of white clothes. Put various seasonal fruits and pieces of sugar cane near it. Also put various eatables near it. Also put a piece of gold in it and cover it up with a copper plate filled with jaggery. Atop it put a banana leaf with sketch of Madan and Rati drawn on it. Do to their poojan with dhoop, gandh etc and then arrange a katha of Lord Vishnu. In the morning offer that pot to Brahmins. Offer them food and eat food without salt, give dakshina to Brahmins and should say that O Janardan who lives in the heart of everyone by the name of anand, that kaam roopi Janardan should get pleased with my anushthan. Perform like this every month on dwadashi. On dwadasi one should eat amalak fruit and sleep on the floor. On next day perform poojan of Lord Vishnu. On thirteenth offer a golden statue of Madan, a bedding, white cow along with ghrit dhenu to Brahmins. As per own capacity offer things to a Brahmins couple and do they poojan saying ‘ You get pleased”. Then sing the names of Kamdev. Offer again food, sugar cane and flower garlands to Brahmins.

Taraka Dwadashi Vratt: Yudhushther after the battle of mahabharat went to Sri Krishna and told him that he is a great sinner as ha has caused killing of Bhishm, Drona etc. many mahatamas. He asked him to advice him some way to get rid of the negative effects of his karmas. Following story was narrated by Lord Krishana.
Once upon a time in the land of Vidharbha there was a king by the name of Kushdhwaj. He while following a dear in jungle by mistake aimed an arrow on a Brahmin who died because of it. Because of this act of his after death he was sent to raurav narak. After suffering there he took birth as a snake and after that he was born as a lion. In all these yonis and many others which followed he kept on performing bad karmas. Since he had observed Taraka Dwadashi Vratt in previous life, in all the above yonis he spent very little time and did not suffer much. As a result of the fruit of this Vratt he was again born in Vidarbha as a king and ruled for a very long time. At the end of it he was sent to the realm of Vishnu.

This Vratt is observed during the month of Margshirsh, shukla paksh on dwadashi tithi. Take bath in the morning, offer tarpan and poojan and till sunset keep performing havan. At sunset draw a Surya mandal with all the planets and stars on earth smeared with cow dung. (It is drawn with eight petalled lotus with sun in the centre and all the rest eight planets in the eight petals and located as per their specific directions). Also draw moon and dhruv in it. Then after offering arghya in a copper pot perform poojan with dhoop, deep, akshat, gandh, gold and water. Raise the arghya patra to one’s head on knees and facing eastern direction with the mantra Sahasrashirsha…….. offer argh to surya mandal drawn on the ground. Then offer food to the Brahmins. This Vratt should be done for all the twelve months starting form Margshirsh offering food made with sugar, Sohalak, Til Tandul, Apoops made with jaggery, Laddu/Modak, Khandveshtak, Sattu, Poori with jaggery in it, Madhushirsh, Payas (kheer), Ghritparn (Karanj) and Kasaar to Brahmins during different months. After seeking pardon take food in silence. In udyapan make a surya mandal in silver and perform its poojan. Offer it to the Brahmin along with laddu, twelve earthen pots and dakshina.

One who does like this for thousands of years stays in the nakshatra mandal and then goes to the realm of Lord Vishnu. This Vratt was performed by Sati, Parvati, Satyabhama, Rukmani, Damyanti etc. Sins of many lives are removed by observing this vratt alone.

Gauvatsa Dwadashi Vratt: Once Yudhshther asked lord Krishana as to how to undo the effect of killing of his own people during the battle of Mahabharata. Lord Krishna asked him to observe this Vratt which is observed during the month of Kartik, shukla paksh on dwadashi tithi. One should take bath in a sacred river and make samkalp of the Vratt and eat only once during the it. At madhyaan perform gau poojan with gandh, dhoop, deep, flowers, kumkum, akshat, bade made out of urad daal, garlands chanting the following mantra,
Om, Mata Rudrinaam Duhita Vasunaam Svasadityanaamritasya Nabhih. Pra Nu Vocham Chikitushe Janaya Ma Gaamnagaamditim Vadhishth Namo Namah Swaha. After doing her poojan like this offer eatables to her with loving care. Then touch her with following mantra and seek her pardon, Om! Sarvdevamaye Devi lokanam Shubhnandini, Maatarmamaabhilishitam Saflam Kuru Nandini. After this offering water to her offer namaskaar with full bhakti. On that day do not eat anything cooked on a tava, observe celibacy. By the dint of this vratt, one gets every thing in this life and after death resides in the realm of Gaulok for a period equal to the hair on the skin of the cow.

It is said that during churning of the great ocean along with other things five cows also came out of it and their names are Nanda, Subhadra, Surbhi,  Sushila, Bahula. They were called lokmata or mothers of the world. They came out for the welfare of every one and all the devtas (divine beings). They were offered to Jamdagni, Bhardwaj, Vashishtha, Asit and Gautam. Six things of the cow are considered special, Gomaya1, Gaurochan2, Gaumootra3, Gaudugdha4, Curd5 and Ghrit6.  From Gomaya1 Bilv tree sprouted and Luxmi always resides in it and hence it is also called Shrivriksh. Seeds of lotus flowers also came from it. Gorochan2 is very sacred and provides every thing. Guggal came from Gaumootra3, which is beautiful to look at and also fragrant. It is offering for all the divine beings especially lord Shiva. What ever seeds which are essential for creation of this world come from cows Milk, Gaudugdha4. Curd5 is used for all kinds of sacred acts. Nectar comes from Ghrit6 which devtas like very much. Brahmin and cows both are from the same lineage. In the heart of Brahmin Vedmantra reside while in the heart of cows Havi resides. In the body of cow, vedas with its six limbs are always established.

In the base of the horns of a cow, Brahma and Vishnu, in the middle Shiva and at the top all the torthas reside. In its forehead Gauri resides and in the nose Katikeya. In her two eyes sun and moon and in the two nostrils Kambal and Ashwatar, two mighty naag devtas. In the teeth eight Vasugan, in the tongue Varun, in the kuhar Saraswati, in the gandasthal Yam and Yaksha, in the lips both dawn and dusk, in the neck Indra, in kukud all Rakshas, in the four groins and feet Dharm, in the middle of its hoofs Gandharv, in front snakes and at the back raskhas ganas. In  her back eleven Rudras, in its waist all the Pitra, in its cheeks all the humans, in its apan Shri resides. In its hair all the rays of the sun reside. In its urine is Ganga and in its stools is Yamuna. In its udders all the four great oceans. In the milk flows from them all the clouds, rains and water. In its stomach Garhpatya agni, in its heart Dakshina agni, in its throat Ahvahniya agni, in its palat Sabhayagni. In its bones all the mountains, in its majja all the yajnas are located. All Vedas are inside her.

One day Lord Shiva in the form of an old Brahmin was roaming around with Uma in the form of a cow. Slowly he went to an ashram of Bhrigu and asked him to take care of his cow for two days as he planned to go to Jambudweep for bath and hence would come after two days. Rishi agreed to take care of the cow. Lord Shiva left that place and later on converted in to a lion and came back there. On seeing the lion cow started jumping out of fear. All the rishis also felt scared. Because of her jumping around marks of all the four hoofs were printed on a stone there. This mark is seen even today at Narmada teerth. Here whosoever touches the shiv linga of Shambhu tirth is absolved of the sin of killing a cow. On who bathes in this tirth is absolved of the sin of brahmhatya even. The rishi then got angry and brought out a bell given to them by Lord Brahma and sounded it. On hearing its sound, the lion left that place. After some time Lord Shiv came back in his original form astride Nanda and with Parvati, Vinayak, Kartikeya, Veerbhadra, Chamunda, Ghantakarn, Yaksha, Rakshas, Gandharv, Muni, Vidyadhar and nags with their wives. All the rishi performed their poojan. On the Kartik month, shukla paksh, dwadishi tithi, the rishis did the poojan of the cow by the name of Nandini. Thus this Vratt is being observed from that day onwards.

Once there was a king by the name of Utaanpaad. He had two wives by the name of Suruchi and Suniti. Suniti gave birth to Dhruv and she put it under the care of Suruchi as she used to attend to the needs of Utaanpaad. Suruchi used to look after all the household chores. During rift between the two wives Suruchi killed Dhruv but he came back to life immediately. She killed him many times and he revived again and again. She wondered how it is happening like this. Hence she asked Suniti as to what power she has by the dint of which her son can not be killed. She told her that it is because of the Govatsa Dwadashi Vratt. She advised her also to observe the same Vratt. So Suruchi also observed this Vratt and always remained beside her husband Utaanpaad.       

Devshayani and Devuthayani Vratt: When sun comes in the mithun rashi put Lord Vishnu to sleep and when sun comes in the tula rashi wake him up. In adhimaas also the procedure is same. During the month of Ashadh, shukla paksha, ekadashi observe fasting. Prepare a bed with white pillow and let Lord Vishnu with yellow cloth and holding Conch, Chakra, Mace and Lotus in his four hands rest. One should give bath to the lord with Curd, Milk, Honey, Ghee and water. Then offer gandh, kumkum, dhoop etc and dress him up properly. Pray to him with following mantra,

Supte Tvayai Jaganath, Jagat Suptam Bhavedidam,
Vibudhe Tvyai Budhyet Jagat Sarvam Characharam.

Thus putting him to sleep, standing in front of him take samkalp of various rules to be observed during the Vratt. This Vratt should be observed for four months in a year.

One who abstains from jaggery, becomes a king with sweet voice; one who abstains from using oil for four months becomes one with beautiful body; one who leaves usage of Katuoil , all his enemies are killed; one who leaves usage of oil of Mahua gets unparallel fortunes; if one leaves eating of flowers he becomes a Vidyadhar in heavens; one practices yog during all the four months he achieves brahmpad; one who leaves all tastes like sour, pungent, sweet etc. in his food he body is never deformed and ill fate never falls on him; one who abstains from taking tambul (paan) he enjoys great bhog in his life; by abstaining from the usage of ghee one gets beautiful body; one who abstains from fruits one becomes intelligent and have many children; if he eats non cooked food he gets nirmal body; if he abstains from applying oil on the body one kinds proximity to Kuber; abstaining from the usage of curd, milk, takra (matha)-one reaches Golok; by abstaining from the usage of Sthalipaak one reaches the realm of Indra; by taking a vow of sleeping on the floor one becomes Vishnu bhakta; one who abstains from cutting nails and hair, daily takes ganga snan, remains maun, no one goes against his wishes; who always eats on floor, he becomes owner of land; one who always repeats the mantra Om Namo Narayanaya  and remains without food he gets a fruit equal to godaan; smearing the mandir of Vishnu for four months with various special things for four months one becomes a king for a long time; one who circumambulates lord Vishnu for hundred times singing his praises and offers him garlands, is awarded Vishnu lok; One who daily discusses scriptures with people and offers them knowledge becomes like Vyas in the end goes to Vishnu’s realm; one who takes bath every day, he never goes to hell; one who controls himself over usage of food gets fruit equal to a bath in Pushkar; One who takes food in the 6th part of the day, resides in heavens permanently; one who eats food on a tree leaf, gets the fruit of staying in Kurukshetra; by abstaining from consumption of water for two prahar one becomes disease free; One who eats food on a Shila he gets the fruit of bathing in Prayaag.

Once Yognidra pleased the lord with her intense tapasya and asked for a place in his body. Lord looked over his body and realized that he has already given various places to many divinities such as, Luxmi stayed in his chest, Conch, Chakra, mace and Lotus in his hands, a tiara on his head, kundals in his ears. So he asked yoganidra to reside in his eyes for four months. So during chaturmaas when she resides in his eyes he goes to sleep. At that time Luxmi sits by his side pressing his feet along with Brahma and mighty Ksheer sagar washes his feet and Sheesh becomes his bed.

On Ekadashi of Kartik month Shukla paksh lord awakes. To wake him up use the following mantra, Idam Vishnurvi Chakrame Tredha Ni Dadhe Padma, Samudhmasya Paamsure Swaha. Playing on various musical instruments take him in chariot and singing his praises give him a ride. One should stay awake whole side in a temple on ekadashi. On dwadashi take morning bath and perform Vishnu poojan and perform havan in agni with ghee etc. and then offer food to Brahmins. Offer laddus made out of jaggery, ghee, curd and honey. Perform poojan of 11/10/8/5 or 2 vipra. Also offer food to Snayasis. The offer dakshina to Brahmins and let them go. Then eat food and what ever was left for four months may also be eaten during this time. By doing this one gets Dharma. One who completes this Vratt as per the rules he is never born again. One who observes dev shayan properly in the end goes to the realm of Vishnu.

Niranjan Dwadashi Vratt: During ancient times there was a raajrishi king by the name of Ajpaal. His subjects came to him and asked him to alleviate their problems. King pondered over it and observed this Vratt.

When Ajpaal was king at the same time Ravan was ruling over Lanka. Who appointed all the devtas for his sewa. Chandrma was Chatra, Indra was general, Vayu was the cleanser of dirt, Varun was provider of water, Yam was the controller of enemies, Manu was appointed for discussions etc. Gandharvas sang his praises, Apsaras danced in front of him, Vidyadhar played musical instruments, Ganga etc sacred river offered their waters. One day his nishachar told him that all has come for his seva except Ajpaal. So Ravan sent his messenger to the king asking him to report for his seva. Ajpal did not want to appear in front of Ravan. So he called his attendant FEVER to go to Ravan. So FEVER went their and all sitting there with Ravan were greatly affected by it. On experiencing this Ravan realized his mistake and told that Ajpal should stay in his kingdom and not come here at all.

During the month of Kartik, shukla paksh dwadishi tithi, in the evening awaken the lord. With the help of Brahmins perform a havan. Offer niranjan to the lord with oil from the tree of Vardhmaan (Airand), perform his poojan with dhoop, deep, chandan, ornaments, precious stones, clothes etc. Also perform poojan of Luxmi, Shiva, Guri, Yaksh, Ganpati, all the planets, one’s parents, Naag etc. Aslo offer niranjan to cows and buffalos. Apply sindoor to the cows and adorn them. One can take horses also in this procession. House should be adorned with various symbols. Purohits should follow saying Shantirastu, Samridhirastu etc. Wherever this Vratt for great peace is observed in that kingdom all the obstructions are removed, people get enough of everything.

Samprapti Dwadashi Vratt: This Vratt is observed for six months starting from Ashadh Krishan Paksh Dwadashi up to the month of Margshirsh. Different names of Vishnu to be used during these months are Pundrikaksh, Madhav, Vishvroop, Purushottam, Achut and Jaya.

Observe fast on this day and perform poojan of the lord with above names depending upon the month. After poojan offer food to Brahmins and in the end give them dakshina. By observing this Vratt one gets all the desires fulfilled.


Govind Dwadashi Vratt: This Vratt is observed during the month of Paush, Shukla paksh, Dwdashi. Keep fast on that day and perform poojan of Govind with dhoop, deep, naivedya and flowers. Also keep repeating his name inside ones mind. Do not meet hypocrites that day. Offer dakshina to Brahmins as per ones capacity. Observes should use Gomaya, Gaumootra, curd of milk for prashan. Next day after bath offer food to Brahmins and also eat oneself after offering food to a cow. Repeat this for complete one year and at the end of the year make a statue of Luxmi along with govind in gold and after performing its poojan offer same to Brahmins along with a savatsa cow. Repeat it every month.


Its fruit is equal to giving away 100 gold plated horn cows along with a buffalo to Brahmins. After enjoying every thing in this world one goes to the realm of Gaulok.

TRAYODASHI:

As per Vrah Puran from the right hand of the lord Dharm was generated. When Chandra abducted Brihaspatis wife Tara, Dharma felt very bad and left the world and went to jungles. Since Dharma left the world so, adharma spread all around and fierce battles again ensued between Daevtas and suras. They started killing each oter. Then Narda went and told everything to Brahma. Brahma along Devtas and Asuras went to the jugle and located Dharma. He was roaming around in the form of a Bufflo. They all requested to him to return and tried to please him. In the end he agreed and came back to the world and Devtas felt relieved. Since dharma got re-established in the world on this day, people were told to perform shradh and tarpan with milk. Those who would do like this will go to heavens and stay comfortably with all the devtas.  



Samaaraadhan Vratt: Once Yudhishthar asked Lord Krishna to tell him some Vratt by the power of which a person may be set free from visiting Yampuri. Lord Krishana explained to him that he also asked same wuestion to Mudgal Muni who narrated the follwiing tale to him.


Once Mudgal Munji fell unconscious on the ground and saw a few people with burning bodies come out of him and stand infront. They then started to pull a thumb sized person from his heart out with ropes and took to Yampuri. When thay reached the place of Yamraj, Mudgal muni saw all kinds of diseases sitting all around and doing poojan of Yamraj. On seeing him, Yamraj told his messangers that you have brough wrong person. Go leave him back and bring kshatriya Mudgal son of Bhisham who resides in the Kaundinya city instead. Confused the messengers went back to bring the other person. When they reached there they found no symptoms of death in him and came back again. Then Yamraaj told them that you could not see any symptoms of death in him because he has performed this Vratt. One who observes this Vratt, my mesasengers can not see such a person and the person will not come to Yampuri but go to Vishnu lok and then to the relam of Shiva.


When during the month of margshirsh Trayodashi there is no Sunday or Tuesday then invite 13 knowledgeable brahmins who give katha of Puraan and are pure. Offer them asan. Give them sesame seed massage, fragrant warm water for bath and look after them properly. Make them sit facing east and offer them Shalyann, Mudgann, apoop made with jaggery, and properly cooked food with respect.


Again one should do achman and praise the Brahmins. Offer them sesame seeds tandul, dakshina, chatra and kalash of water in a copper plate. Repeat it for one year. One who does this for even one year, he will never come to Yampuri. Then in plane he ascends to Arkmandal and then Vishnu pur and Shivpuri.


Anang Trayodashi Vatt:  When Shiva burnt Kaamdev, he had no body. So he started to live in the body of everyone. Kaamdev observed this Vratt has its name Anang came to be used. It removes all shortcomings and increases auspiciousness.


During month of Margshirsh, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of SHASHISHEKHAR with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At noght use HONEY for prashan. One becomes beautiful like Kamdev


During month of Paush, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of YOGESHWAR with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use CHANDAN for prashan. Whole body becomes fragrant like chandan.


During month of Magh, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of MAHESHWAR with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use MOTI CHOORN for prashan. One gets great fortune.


During month of  Chaitra, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of SUROOPAK with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use KARPOOR for prashan. One becomes beautiful like moon.


During month of Vaishakh, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of MAHAROOP with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use JAYAPHAL for prashan. One is born in a high family.


During month of Jyeshtha, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of PRADUMANA with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use LAVANG (laung)for prashan. It grants great living place, wealth, all comforts.


During month of Asadh, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of UMABHARTA with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use TILODAK for prashan. One is granted beautiful form and enjoys life for full hundred years.


During month of Shravan, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of UMAPATI with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use SESAME SEEDS for prashan. One gets fruit of Paundrik Yajna.


During month of Bhadrapad, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of SADYOJAAT with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use AGAR for prashan.


During month of Ashwin, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of TRIDHISHADHIPATI with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use SWARNODAK for prashan. One gets best form, good fortune and also gets te fruit of millions of Nishak daan.


During month of Kartik, Shukla paksha, trayodashi take bath in a river, pond, etc., with senses under control, perform poojan of Shiv with the name of VISHVESHWAR with flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya and seasonal fruits. Then perform a havan with sesame seeds and rice. At night use DAMAN fruit for prashan.

By the dint of this Vratt one gets great power, in the end goes to Shivalok.


Daurgandhya Nashak Vratt: Once queen Vishnubhakti asked Jatukarnaya muni for a process to get rid of bad smell of body. Then muni told her this Vratt and it is to be observed as follows.


During the month of Jyeshtha shukla paksh and trayodashi tithi one should take bath in a holy/ sacred water source and perform poojan of white Ark, red Karveer and Neemb tree which have grown in a holy area. All these three trees are very dear to Sun. On Sun rise, after his darshan meditating on him, do poojan of these trees with flowers, naivedya and dhoopp and offer them ones prostrations. Both men and women can perform this Vratt. By its observance bad smell of body and ill fate both are removed and good fate arises.


CHATURDASHI:


As per Vrah Puran on this day Shankar spoiled the yajna of Dakshprajapti and turned him into an animal, hence he himself was named Pashupati nath. This tithi was given to him.


PALI VRATT: It is observed during the month of Bhadrapad, shukla paksha chaturdashi. Go to a pond, underground water source or a well and perform poojan of Varun dev and offer arghya . Use fruit, flowers, dhoop, deep, chandan, mahawar, saptdhanya, food prepared without cooking on fire, rice, dates, coconut, bijaura nimbu, narangi, grapes, pomegranate, beetle nut for offering during poojan with following prayers,


Varunaye Namastubhyam, Namaste Yaadsampate,

Apampate Namaste Astu Rasaanaampatye Namah, Ma Kledam Ma Ch Daurgandhyam,

Virasyam Ma Mukhe Astu Me, VarunoVarunibharta Vardoastu Sada Mam.


O Swami of all water born jeevas, I bow to you. O Swami of water and all dravyas which come from water, I bow to you. My body should not have disodour, sweat and m mouth should not have foul taste. O Swami of Varuni devi! be pleased with me and always ready to give boons.


On this day eat food which is not prepared over fire and also fruits only. This Vratt is a provider of long life, respect, good fortune. Like water of ocean his wealth also never dries up.


RAMBHA Vratt: It is also observed during the month shukla paksh chaturdash. All devtas, gandharwas and Apsaras also observed it.


On this day with the help of various kinds of fruits, sprouted grains, saptdhanya, deep, chandan, dahi, durva, akshat, clothes, cook food, jayaphal, elaichi, lavang perform poojan of Kadli tree ( banana tree) with following prayer,


Chitya Tvam Kandaldalaih, Kadli Kaamdayani,

Sharirarogyalavanyam Dehi Devi Namoastu Te.


After this one should have food of ripe fruits. One who observes this Vratt with devotion, in his family no misfortune or poverty ever occurs, no unchaste woman, adulterer or one going against the wishes of ones husband come in to that family. Women who perform this Vratt get good fortune, children and grand children, wealth, long life, glory/repute and lives with her husband for a period of full 100 years. This Vratt was observed by Gayatri in the heavens.


Agnayi Shiv Chaturdashi Vratt: In the ancient times when agni dev disappeared then there was no one to do his work. At that time there was competition between Utthaya muni and Angira Muni as to who is superior. Both of them had many discussions and could not decide. In the end they went to Brhama for his decision and told him every thing. He advised them to call all the devtas and lokpals so that the matter could be solved in their presence. Every body, rishis, devtas, gandharwas, yakshas, kinners, Rakshas, daityas, danav came but Sun did not come. Brahma asked Utthaya muni to go and call Surya dev. He went to him and requested him to come but he was sent back by Surya dev. Surya dev told him that if he went away from his duty whole of the world will fall in to pitch darkness and life will finish on earth and hence he can not go. On hearing this muni went back. Then Brahma told Angira muni to go and call Surya. On reaching Surya he was also given the same reply. But Angira muni told him to kindly go to Brahma as he himself will take up his duty in his absence. Surya agreed to it. So Angira muni increased his effulgence to light up the world. Surya dev went to Brahma and asked him the purpose of his call. Brahma told him to go back to his work as else Angira muni will burn whole of the world with the heat of his tapasya. On hearing this Surya dev immediately went back to his work place and relieved Angira after doing his poojan. Then all devtas did Angira's poojan and requested him to perform the work of Agni till they were able to locate Agni dev. When Agni dev came he saw Angira muni established as agni in his place. He told Angira to vacate his place and he would take birth through the womb of his wife Shubha as his elder and dear son by the name of Jupiter or Brihaspati out of many of his children.


Agnidev received his place on a chaturthi hence this date is very dear to him. This tithi is known as Aganye Chaturdashi or Raudri Chaturdashi. Devtas in heaven and on earth Mandhata , Manu, Nahush etc observed it. People who are killed during battles, killed of snake bites, those who commit suicide, for them shradh performed on this day provides good movement to their souls.


To observe this Vratt, hold fast on chaturdashi. Perform poojan of three eyed Sadashiva with dhoop, deep, flowers, naivedya, gandh and at night one should not sleep but repeat Shivas name and meditate on him. For prashan at night use panchgavya. Eat Shyamaka (sanva) without oil and alkaline constituents in food. Then offer 108 ahuti in havan with agni mantras.


On the second day after bath, give bath to Shiva with panchamrit, perform their poojan with full devotion. Again perform havan as earlier. Offer aarti to the lord, Brahmin bhojan & dakshina and one should eat observing silence. Do this for complete one year. At the end of one full year prepare a golden statue of Shiva astride silver Nandi. Put it on a copper plate and cover it with two white clothes. Perform poojan of it with gandh, dhoop, deep, white flowers, naivedya etc. One who observes this Vratt gets long life and in the end leaves his body in a sacred place. Then he resides with many devtas in the realm of Shiva. After that he is born as glorious king on earth. He is blessed with many children and grand children and enjoys everything.      


Anant Chaturdashi Vratt: In the ancient times of Kratyug, there was Brahmin by the name of Sumantu from the lineage of Vashishth. He married maharishi Bhrigu daughter Deeksha. A girl was born to them with all the great spiritual signs and she was named Sheela. After giving birth to Sheela, Deekhsa left her body after some time. Sumantu married a second time with Karkasha, who was having same attributes as her name and was opposite of Sheela and always create problems. Sheela, living in her father’s house would decorate all the walls with different sacred signs and perform their poojan. Sumantu was worried about his daughter’s marriage. He arranged her marriage to Kaundinya muni. During marriage he asked his wife to bring all presents and various things to be given to the muni  On hearing this she got angry. She up rooted the mandap and gave only a little food to the couple for the way. She told them to leave and bolted the door of her house form inside.


The couple left in a bullock cart and late after noon they reached the bank of a river. Sheela saw many well dressed women sitting there and performing poojan of Janardan separately. Sheela asked them as to what all of them were doing and was informed that they were doing Anantchaturdashi Vratt. Sheela expressed her wish to do that and asked for the purpose and procedure of same. Following procedure was explained to her.

Observer of the Vratt should go to a river bank with one prasth naivedya. Have a bath there and then prepare a mandal for poojan. Do poojan of Vishnudev with Gandh, Pushp, Dhoop, Deep etc. and listen to this katha or story. Half of the offered naivedya should be given to a Brahmin and rest half should be consumed by one self as prasadam. Establish a thread inn front of the lord with 14 knots in it and anoint it with kumkum. After poojan, it should be worn on the right hand by men and on the left hand by women. Tie it on the wrist with following mantra,


Anantsansaarmahasamudre Magnan Samabhyaudhra Vasudev, Anantroope Viniyojitatma hyanantroopaye Namo Namaste. After tying it one should offer naivedya. Do dhyan of the lord and then one should go to one’s house.


Sheela performed it as instructed and when she reached her house, it was filled with grains & wealth and cows. She also was beautifully adorned with dress and ornaments etc. She looked like Savitri. One day her husband got angry and broke the thread worn in her left wrist. From that day onwards poverty descended on their household. Thieves took away wealth and cows. Relations between both of them and with their friends got strained. Kaundinya muni got fed up and  left his household to live in  jungles. Fasting, repeating name of Anant he awaited for his darshan. For a long time he could not have darshan of Ananant. So he went looking for him. On the way he asked a mango tree if he has seen anant, to which tree replied in negative. Next he asked a grazing cow who was accompanied by a calf. She also told him that he hasn’t seen him. Then he met a buffalo and inquired from him about Anant but got no positive reply. Then on the way he saw two beautiful ponds and asked them if they had seen Anant, they also refused. Then he asked a donkey and an elephant and from them also he got no positive reply. In the end frustrated he fell on the ground. That very moment Anant appeared before him and should his vishvaroop in the four armed form. Muni got exceptionally happy and asked for his forgiveness by the following sloka,


Paapoahm Paapkarmaaham Paapatma Paapsambhava, Pahi Mam Pundrikaksha Sarv Paapharo Bhav, Adya Me Saflam Janam Jeevitam Ch Sujivitam.


Muni asked the lord who were all those whom he met in the jungle. The mongo tree which he met first of all was Brahmin who knew Vedas in his past life. But he was very proud of his knowledge and did not give his knowledge to his disciples and that is why he fell in to tree kingdom.


The cow you met was powerless earth. She could not bear anything and was barren. The buffalo met on the way was Dharma. Two ponds met on the way were two Brahmin wives of the past who looked after dharma and adharma. They were sisters. They did not offer any daan or food to Brahmins, guests or hungry person, hence they became water ponds. Here also they will face each other and keep competing in the form of waves. Donkey seen on the way was person with great anger in his past life while the elephant met was spoiler of dharma in his past life. Muni was advised to go home and perform this Vratt with great devotion and told that he would be given a status of Nakshatra in his next life. Muni returned to his house and lived happily with his wife Sheela. After death both went to heavens and muni became Punarvasu Nakshatra there. One who observes this Vratt and tells this story to others


Nakt Vratt: On chaturdashi of shukla paksh of any month this Vratt is observed. Every month has two chaturdashis and two ashtamis. On that do perform poojan of Shiva and meditate on him. Do not eat during the day and at night eat making earth as utensil. In Kashi utensils are engraved on earth and in olden times many would eat in those utensils or in their own hands and were called Karpatri. Bhiksa is better than fasting, Ayachit Vratt is better than Bhiksha, Nakt Vratt is better than Ayachit Vratt. It is said during Poorvahn time Devtas eat food, during Madhyahn Muni’s eat, during Aprahn Pitrs eat while in Saanykaal Guhyaks ( devotees of Sun) eat their food. One who is observing this Vratt must bath daily, should it little food, always speak the truth, should offer ahutis daily in havan, sleep on floor. He should do like this for full one year. Then take a kalash filled with ghee and on it make a statue of Shiva of mud. Bath it is panch gvya of Kapila cow. Offer ashtaang arghya, fruits, dhoop, deep, yav, kheer, durvankur, sesame seeds, rice etc. Then keeping both the knees on earth and raising arghya patra to ones head offer arghya to Mahadev. Then offer different types of eatables to Mahadev. Offer a cow and a bull to Brahmin.


One who observes this Vratt goes to the realm of Rudra in divine body after death. He spends 300 crore years there and then comes back to earth and is born as a great king. Even once if one does the poojan of Sadashiv like this, one goes to heavens.


Shivchaturdashi Vratt: On the trayodishi of shukla paksh of Margshirsh eat only once. On chaturdashi observing fast perform poojan of Shiva and Parvati with flowers, dhoop, deep etc. Make a Vrishabh out of gold, perform its poojan. Then along with the established water pot offer it to Brahmin along with different kinds of foods with following prayer,


Priyataam Dev Devoatra Sadyojatah Pinaakdhrik. Facing north do prashan of ghee. Every month do like this while prashan should be done with gaumootra, Gaumaya, milk, curd, Ghee, Kushodak, Panchgavya, Bilv, Yavagu ( rice husk), Lotus, black sesame seeds. Different flowers to be used in these months poojan are Mandaar, Malti, Dhtoor, Sinduvaar, Ashok, Mallika, Kubjak, Patal, Ark-pushp, Kadamb, red or blue lotus and Kaner.


Give many things to brahmins and in the end release a blue coloured or shade bull. Make a cow and a bull out of gold and establish on a bed with eight pearls. Along with water pot, ghee and shali rice offer to a Brahmin couple.


One who observes this Vratt all the sins of his/her parents are also condoned and one receives fruits equal to performance of thousands of Ashwamedh yajnas. One gets long life, healthy body, progeny and knowledge. After enjoying for a long time in this world one goes to the realm of Vishnu and in the end goes to the realm of Shiva.  


AMAVASYA:


As per Vrah Puran tanmatras appeared from the Brahmas mind. They shone brightly and told the devtas that they wanted to drink nectar and showed their desire to go to the higher realms for it. They thought that they will sit on their asans in space. Hence they raised their faces up and started to move up in a diagonal pathway. Brahma saw them like this and told them to convert into Pitras for all the family people. Since their faces were turned upwards they were called Nandimukh. They were given Dakshinayan time of Surya. Then they asked for jeevika and were granted Amavasya. All the tarpan done with water, sesame seeds and Kusha will be received by them alone. Whosoever will perform such a tarpan they were supposed to give a boon that very moment to them. This Amavasya tithi was given to them.



This tithi is very special for pitra. On this pitras get very pleased when we offer daan and tarpan for them. One who observes fast on this day, gets fruit equal to tarpan performed under the Akhsya – Vat tree which is the best teerth for the pitras. One who performs tarpan for pitras under the akshay vat, his 21 generation are absolved of all the karmas.

POORNIMA:

As per Vrah puran from Brahmas manas putra Attri, moon took birth. He was given 27 daughters by Daksh Prajapati. But out of the 27, Moon liked Rohini the most. Hence he spent most of his time with her. Seeing this all the sisters went to their father Daksh and complained to him. Daksh advised Moon not to do like this but he did not pay any heed to it. To teach him a lesson Daksh gave him curse that he will not able to keep his beauty always. As a result of it he lost all his beauty. Since moon could not be seen, hence devtas, humans, animals, birds, all the vegetation and medicinal plants started to dry up. On advice from Narada, Moon established Somnath shivlainga and started his tapasya to appease Shiva. Shiva got pleased and appeared and told him not to worry as he will not be without beauty always. His beauty will wane during Krishan paksh day by day and will be regained to full glory again on Poornima through shukla paksh increasing day by day. Thus moon got happy. Brahma gave Poornima tithi to Moon.  

On this day Moon became very happy after receiving his son Budh from Tara and he claimed that whosoever will perform my poojan with full devotion on this day, his every wish shall be granted. 


To observe this bath, take bath in the morning in some sacred river and perform tarpan of devtas and pitra. On returning home one should make a beautiful mandal on ground and along with nakshatras establish Moon in it. Perform its poojan with akshat, white flowers, dhoop, deep, eatables cooked in ghee, white clothes. Then seek his forgiveness and in the evening offer arghya with following sloka,


Vasantbandhav Vibho Sheetanshoswasti Nah Kuru, Gaganarnavmanikya Chandra Dakshayani Pate

At night take food of tinni rice and shaak keeping silent. Repeat it on every poornmasi or full moon night. Same thing can also be performed during amavasya.


Poornima of three months of Vaishakh, Kartik and Magh are special for Vratt. It is said that in Vaishakh month one should bath in KSHIPRA in UJJAIN; In Kartik one should bath in PUSHKAR; In Magh one should bath in Ganga at VARANASI. One who performs pitra tarpan on this day generates great merit.


During Magh one should perform pitra tarpan and offer gold, sesame seed pot, blanket, woollen clothes, precious stones, cotton etc. to Brahmin. During the month of Vaishakh offer gold, clothes, water pot, cow, land etc. to Brahmin. During Kartik do Vrishotsarg. Poojan of Lord Vishnu be performed with niranjan. Elephant, horses, chariot, cow out of ghee etc ten in number should be given in offerings to Brahmin. Also offer banana, dates, coconut, pomegranate, kundru, kooshmand, karela etc. Those who do not offer anything on these days face many diseases and poverty. Offering should also be made to sisters, sister’s son, father’s sister or relatives with less means etc. By offering to friends, person from good family, needy, a person who has come to us with requirement, one goes to heaven.   


Mahakartiki Vratt: This observed on the poornima when Kritika nakshatra is there and its either a Monday or Thursday. This kind of tithi happens once in very many years.

In the ancient times in the kingdom of King Dalip there was a queen by the name of Kalingbhadra. She was beautiful and had all good qualities. She always gave offerings to Brahmins and food to them. Once she took a vow to observe this Vratt for six months. She would perform all the poojan during each parna and offer things to Brahmins. When only some time was left in completion of this Vratt, while one day she was sleeping with her husband, a snake bit her and she died. In her next life, she became a goat but still remembered her past life. She again started her vow and would often go away from the herd and observe fasting. Once during the Kartik month, she went in to some one else’s field. The owner captured her and brought her home. Fortunately, Sage Agastya was there who immediately recognized her as queen Kalingbhadra of the past. He intervened and made her free again from the hold of the owner. From there, she went into jungle and ate leaf of jujube and drank water to complete her paran of fasting. Attri rishi gave her teachings of knowledge of yog and left. She again started her Vratt and with the time left her body through the power of her yog. In the next birth she took birth as a daughter of Rishi Gautam from his wife Ahalya. She was named YOGLUXMI. Gautam rishi married her to Shandilya Muni. There she would daily look after all the guests, devtas and pitras with full devotion.


One day Maharishi came there and with the power of his tapasya knew all her background and asked her how many Kritikas are there. On hearing this she answered that they are six in number. On hearing this Attri muni again gave her mantra and told her the procedure to observe this Vratt with the help of which one enjoys all comforts in this world and is granted mukti afterwards.  Procedure of this Vratt is as follows,


In the morning brush teeth, observing Naktr Vratt one should take the vow. Take bath in any sacred teerth, river, pond or even at one’s home. Then perform poojan of devta, Rishi, Pitr and guest. Perform havan. In the evening in six pots filled with ghee and milk make six forms of Kritikas with gold, silver, precious stones, navneet (butter), grains and pisht. Establish them and surround them with a red thread which has been anointed with Kumkum, Chandan, flowers of Chameli, dhoop, deep, naivedya and perform their poojan. Then offer them to Brahmin with following mantra,


Om Saptarshidara Hyanasya Vallabha, Ya Brahmana Rakshitya Iti Yuktah,

Tushtah Kumarasya Yatharthmatro Mamaapi Supreet tara Bhavantu.


Brahmin on receiving the statue should chant the following sloka,


Dharmdah Kamdah Santu, Ema Nakshatra Matrah,

Kritika Durg Sansaraat, Tarayantava Vayoh Kulam.  


When Brahmin takes all the samagri/offerings and is leaving the house follow him for six steps and then come back in to the house. As a result of it, one goes to the realm of nakshatras in a plane. If a woman does this she along with her husband enjoys divine pleasures in the realm of nakshatra for a long time.


OTHER SPECIAL DAYS FOR VRATT:


Vaishakh Shukla paksha Tritya ------------------- Satya yug started on this day.


On this day perform poojan of Luxmi and Vishnu with gandh, flowers, dhoop, deep, naivedya, clothes and ornaments and give it in offering to Brahmin.


Kartik Shukla paksha Navmi ---------------------- Treta Yug started on this day.


After taking bath in a river or a pond perform poojan of Uma and Neelkanth Shankar with flowers, dhoop, deep and naivedya. Also offer a cow made out of sesame seeds.


Bhadrapad Krishan paksh Trayodashi ------------ Dwapar started on this day.


After doing pitra tarpan, offer many kinds of items made with the help of honey and ghee to Brahmins along with a milk giving healthy, good looking cow along with a calf to Brahmins.


Magh Poornima --------------------------------------- Kaliyug started on this day.


Perform poojan of Gayatri along with Brahma with gold, clothes, fruits, etc.

Any offering made on this day is akshaya or it is eternal. If one has not enough means then one should offer less, even then one gets great merits. Depending upon the means one should offer bedding, umbrella, asan, shoes, clothes, gold, food to Brahmins. In the end with pleased disposition eat food with your friends and relatives in silence. By making offering on these tithes all kinds of sins,i.e Kayik ( performed by this body), Vachik (performed through speech) and Mansic (performed by our mind) are removed.
