What we call as inhalation (श्वास)and exhalation (प्रश्वास), it has great connection with action and experience. Without knowing this process one cannot have knowledge or perform karm correctly. Breath of a normal person (आम व्यक्ति), Sadhak (साधक) and Yogi (योगि) is quite different. Jeev breaths in air from out side his body which falls under the control of time or kaal (काल). What attracts it inside his body is the central point (मध्य बिन्दु) of his eyes. It has got strong attractive power. Due to it only the air is drawn into the body from the realm of time. The air entering from the bindu or central point of the eyes, descends into the throat area below which are string like structures or tantu (तन्तु). This string like structure is in the form of a bundle (गुच्छे). The air about which we have talked is nothing but anu or atom of time or kaal. The bundle of string like structure is called as string of time (काल का तार) or string of breath (श्वास का तार). With the help of these the air descends into the navel area and keeps on rotating there continuously.
After this one flow of it starts upwards from the front into the area of solar plexus and other flow starts going downward. From the area of Apang (अपाङ्ग) below a flow of heat energy rises upwards and also goes to the solar plexus area (निरय हृद) naturally. Thus both the flows, earlier upward flow and this heat flow, join together and enter into lungs.
Our breathing system, lungs has many holes in it. Piercing them, it transcends our lungs, it enters throat and then goes to palate. From here it leaves our body in the form of exhalation. There are two ways of breath to come out of the body, either nose or mouth. When it is exhalaed from mouth, then the realm of time outside, draws more breath in itself from our body than necessary. Hence our life time finishes before the desired time. Breathing out from nose is natural. Kaal or time cannot devour it. The main benefit of it is that the jeev progresses on the path of karma and performs karma. If needed, he can attract the air from the veil of karma (कर्म के पर्दे से). But if he exhales simultaneously from mouth and nasal, then karma never fructify or activity cannot bear final fruit. Because by connection with kaal or time it loses it shine or effulgence or power. This is the flow of breath in an ordinary person. Thus entry point is eyes, primary exit point base of palate and final exit point nasal passage and mouth.
Breathing pattern of Sadhak (साधक) is differnt. Here the heat and air come up into the solar plexus area as explained earlier. But from here the air cannot rise upwards into the lungs but only heat rises up. As a result of it lungs become dry. Over time, as this process keeps on happening, when this dryness rises to it maximum limits, a jyoti or light appears at that place. One cannot comprehend start or end of this light. Sadhak thins that its atma jyoti but it is not. Its only a preliminary state towards atma jyoti. Before expereince of this jyoti one achieves state of kumbhak (कुम्भक) but still it is not natural kumbhak because air or breath is not stopped yet in it. Only heat or taap (ताप) gets stopped here. Air remains kind of in suspension state. From realm of Khechari (खेचरी), nectar descends, which is in the form of self realization for sadhak. This nectar is pure, but sadhak is not able to guard it because sadhaks inherent basic power is less. Though for a sadhak its a form of atma darshan but in actual its a darshan of life force/ jeevani shakti (जीवनी शक्ति) only. Because nectar (अमृत) and jeevani shakti (जीवनी शक्ति) are one and the same thing.
After this sadhak focuses on the space between the brows then shakti or breath starts to leave that space slowly in a subtle manner. Sadhak thinks he has achieved connect with Sahasrar (सहस्रार) but it is not that connect yet. This is just an inkling of it. It is only joining of Jyoti with jyoti. When inner jyoti joins with the outer jyoti then one should know that the final breath has left the sadhak body. This is siddh avastha (सिद्धावस्था) or accomplished state of Sadhak. Then he has no connection with the physical frame and a great light is formed in the chidakash. This is also not actual state of Sahasrar.
For connection with Sahasrar, kunalini power (कुण्डलिनी शक्ति) has to be fully awake, this is not so in case of a Sadhak. This is possible in case of a yogi only because he has been equipped with guru kaya (गुरु काया) at initiation by his guru and his kundalini power was awakened right at start. Sadhak does not have this body provided by his guru during initiation, sadhak gets this guru kaya after death. All his efforts before leaving his body are used in the preperation of this guru kaya for his next birth. For entry into Sahasrar, guru kaya is necessaary but for experiencing jyoti or entry into this body is not required. Om!
