Science of Upward rising or Urdhav-retas

Science of Upward rising or Urdhav-retas - Mahapath.

(By Gopinath Kaviraj Translated by SN Khandelwal in Hindi)

Satva, Raj and Satva, The three gunas are part of the nature. Out of these, Tamoguna is heaviness (Grossness)  or veil or covering (of ignorance). Satva represents subtleness or lightness. In between these two is the dynamic Rajas. It tries to bring Satya into tam or Tam into Satya. Yog, Kriya, Prayers, meditation and spiritual austerities are rajas quality based Satva. With its effect Satogun increases and Tamoguna decreases. Thus heaviness of tamoguna starts decreasing  and effulgence of Satvguna starts increasing. As a result of it, the veil (of ignorance) covering the body gets removed and lightness or subtleness of body is realized along with effulgence. In the extreme stage of this, body also becomes disease free. Now the body is without an veil or covering. This subtleness is achieved because of greater amount of Satya. This awakening is achieved through pranayam, jap and dhyan etc. Till the body is Satva centric, it remans effulgent and pure light form. The effect of madhya akarshan is minimum in this. This is called lightness of the body. Effect of this is that the body starts to levitate. The state of weightlessness of the physical body starts to grow more. Its effect is effulgence and lightness of the body. In this state tamoguna gets very much reduced. This is called upward rising or urdhavretas of the body. This happens when sleep or ignorance state of the Kundlini is broken, its gets awakened and spreads its light of self or atmaprakash. Body equipped with this energy is called awakened body. When this happens atoms of the physical body undergo transformation.

Sometime asan rises in air due to holding of breath of Kumbhak. There is air all around us, when the air inside us becomes lighter than that around us then our body rises. This should be understood here that just by levitation does not mean that one can now move through space (at will). For that, higher state of sadhana is needed.

Now subject under discussion is being discussed more clearly. As two opposing forces are continuously working taking support of the cosmos, in the same manner two opposing forces are also continuously working in this physical frame too. Many times their opposition is also felt. When one becomes stronger other gets weaker. A time also comes when only one power gets established. Some time, second power may grow slowly and slowly while first one starts getting weaker. When second one becomes all powerful then the first one almost disappears. This cycle keeps on going. This play is also exhibited in our physical body too.

Knowledge and the knower both keep on experiencing it. All gross material is also like this. This is known as Kaalchakra. Those who want to get rid of it, they follow the middle path. Madya path or middle path means sandhi sthal (joining area), where both opposing forces are equally present. Outside sandhi time is, when day is turning into night or night is turning into day, inside our body also these opposing forces exist. Once these two opposing forces are balanced inside through some or the other practice, the Sandhi sthal is realized. This is called the middle path and is called medium pratipada by Buddha. In its absence no yogi can have the great wealth of Yog. Due to its effect only upper movement is attained. This is the path towards truth. Due to this upward movement, physical body rises up to its maximum elevation. This is called Meru Shikhar (top of mountain Meru). In Yogic language its called Piercing of Ajna chakra. Its effect is that (now) yogi gets established in the middle Bindu of the Sahasrar. Effulgence of this Meru is spread all around in the space. This is called Vyapatti. This is the preliminary stage of moving in the space. On completion of Khechar state, Vyapatti is appears by itself. In other words, we can say that without attaining neutralization of opposing forces, the upward movement is not possible.

It is mentioned in the scripture Yogvashishth that power of movement in space is not possible in Jivanmukt body. Such yogis do not want tis kind of power.  This all is effect of swabhav(temperament) of a particular thing. In the absence of self knowledge also movement in space is possible. It is possible with the effect of medicine(herb), Mantra, Kriya or power of kaal(Time), precious stones. People who are adepts of Gutika's (pills or spheroids) know that this is possible (Upward movement) with the help of a mercury pill made with proper ordination procedure our body can be raised up. On can attain Khechari state too. With help of Mantra or power mantra too, one can attain movement in the sky. By Kriya we mean practice of Yog. Effect of Kaal Shakti is beyond imagination. It has been stated,

अनात्म्वित् अमुक्तोअपि नभोविहरणादिकम्,

Anatmvit Amukto Api Nabho Viharanadikam,

द्रव्यकर्म क्रियाकाल शकत्या प्रापनोति राघवा।

Dravya Karm Kriyakaal Shaktya Praapnoti Raghava.

Knower of the elements and also those who are ignorant of them, can attain upward movement or space travel with some sequence like Mantra, Kriya, precious stones. Knowers of the self do not want it. With regular sequential practice it can be attained. In gods these powers are naturally present.

As per Patanjali, for space travel, relation between space and body, Dharana-Dhyan-Samadhi etc. is very important. Where ever any physical body lives, space is also present there as this element is omni present. All things reside in it. One has to meditate on the relation between space and physical body, and one has to gain full control over this aspect. With this, grossness of the body gets removed and develops lightness. Middle attraction kriya also starts depleting. Apart from this by establishing consciousness in an extremely small object, lightness is attained in the physical frame too. For example, by meditating on an atom, one would develop so much subtleness that one would be able to sit on a single strand of spider web. One develops capability of roaming in the rays of the Sun because by taking refuge of the Sun rays one can travel in the space............Om!
