Yogiraj Tailang Swami

Tailang Swami:

Banaras has been a place of great sadhaks from the very ancient times. Out of the innumerable saints who stayed there, Yogiraj Tailang Swami was a great saint. He lived for 150 years from 1737 to 1887. People of Banaras called him Vishwanath itself after seeing his various yogic powers. He did not establish any math or ashram and never started any separate sect of his own. Actually his disciples were very very few. Some people say he was married and had one son and one daughter and some claim that he was a celibate. Non contradicts the fact that he was a great saint.

According to him for achievement of knowledge of the self one has to know Yog. But for it there is no need to leave one’s family or house. There are certain rules which are to be thought(chintan) of and always followed. For realization one does not have to undergo any exceptionally difficult sadhana but one has to do chintan on it and one will get the results.  This is called SARAL yog. For achieving the fruits of the yog one as to do nirodh of the chit vrittis and without it nothing is possible. One should just keep those rules always in ones mind and try to imbibe them in ones life

On being asked to explain those rules for the welfare of general people, Tailang Swami explained them as follows:

1.A dissatisfied person can not satisfy anyone. Only one who is always satisfied can make every one happy.

2.Our tongue always keeps busy in utterance of sins. One should try to control it.

3.Indolence is the cause of all misfortunes. With effort one should leave it.

4.World is an examination stage of Dharm and Adharm. Before performing one should check each and every karma, for Dharm and Adharm. One should always follow Dahrma.

5.One should never value any other Dharma less. All dharmas have truth in them.

6.We must give something to the poor. Never give to a wealthy persons as he does not require it and will not feel joyous on receiving it.

7.To live with a Sadhu is heaven and not to share his good company is hell.

8.Realization, offering to the right deserving person and satisfaction are the bases for achieving moksh or eternal freedom.

9.Those who after reading the scriptures and understanding them, still do not follow them are even worse than the sinners.

10.In the base of any work or anushthan there should be Dharma else it will not bear the right fruit.

11.Never perform HIMSA. Whether with the purpose of good or bad no jeeva should be killed.

12.One who without cleansing of his sins, without becoming follower of truth from heart takes up ocher robes and becomes a Brahmchari or celibate, he is a smudge on the name of dharma..

13.Like in a house without roof, water of rains enters easily similarly in the mind bereft of thinking process enemies enter.

14.All sinners burn in the fire of their sins whenever they remember them.

15.Continuous focus and thought process is the sure way to realization and else it is death. Do not be proud and refrain from thinking of kama bhog.

16.Mind following the wrong path will cause more trouble than any enemy.

17.A honey bee collects honey without running after the beauty and aroma of a flower same way we should not get entangled in wrong doings but be after knowledge.

18.This is my son and this is my splendor, even those without knowledge if think like this will face kleshas. When he himself is not for himself then how can be his son and money be his.

19.Very few people can cross the ocean of life and death. Most of the people keep running on the shore by just false pretense of dharma.

20.One who attains victory over many in  war is not actually victorious but the one who has mastered his own self.

21.Sin can not attack me, never think like that. With a drop at a time whole utensil fills up. Same way ignorant person becomes a sinner.

22. Never utter strong words to anyone. If we do, we will have to prepare ourselves to listen to it also. If you wound someone, you will get wounded; and if you make some one weep you will have to weep.

23.One who can not win over desires, they can not become pure by becoming nagas(who do not wear any clothes), by keeping jatas(unshorn hair), by smearing their bodies with ashes and by  sleeping on ground.

24.We should also follow same as we sermon others to do. One who has controlled one’s own self can also control others. To controls one’s own self is extremely difficult.

25.Good or bad deeds are performed by our own self. None can purify another.

26.This whole world is like a bubble or like the illusion of water in the desert. One who feels this world as valueless, death can not even glance at such a soul.

27.One who can control his anger which is running like a high speed vehicle is the real driver.Others are only holding the accelerator.

28.With love win over anger, by auspiciousness  win over inauspicious and by truth win over what is untrue.

29.What ever sermon ones guru gives listen to it with full attention and follow it with full heart.

30.Do not speak unnecessarily. One who speaks more generally tells more lies. One should try to talk minimum. Only then one can achieve peace.

I am neither a fool nor a scholar, I am neither taciturn nor talkative,
How can I describe Brahman through arguments and counter arguments?
I am by nature blissful and free……..Chap IV/20, Avdhuta Geeta

The video of his place in Varanasi has been added. The Shiv lingam shown was taken out of the Ganges and placed at its location alone by Tailang Swami ji. It is in itself a feat requiring great strength.
