Avdhoot Amritnath
Yashram was born in Bisau,Rajasthan. His father’s name was Chetram. They shifted from their ancestral village to Bau. Yashram in his later life renounced every thing and became Avdhoot Amritnath. He left his body in 1913. His Samadhi is located in Fatehpur Shekhawati. Here I would like to share the meaning of Avdhoot as most of us do not know its details. An excellent scripture both by the standards of spiritual flight of mind as well as from the point of view of rhyme and meter is the Avdhoot Geeta written by Lord Dattatreya(available in English published by Advait Ashram,5 Dehi Entally Road, Calcutta-14, India). Reading it, it gives sheer joy to the soul and lifts one above and beyond the cacophony of this material world. In this great scripture the word AVDHOOT has been explained as below:
A –Asha paash vinirmukta, he is free from the snares of hopes and expectations. His life is pure from its beginning, through its middle, to its end; and he always dwells in bliss.
V-Vasna varjit, he has uprooted all his desires. His speech is purifying, and he always lives in the ever present Brahman.
Dhu-Dhool dhosar gatrani, (one who has smeared his complete body with ashes of the whole world. All his desires have been burnt to ashes in the fire of his austerities and he blissfully smears it over himself.) Though his body is smeared with grey dust from lack of body consciousness, his mind is pure and healthy. He no longer needs to practice concentration and meditation.
T-Tattva chinta dhrita, he is absorbed in the thought of Brahmin, and that he does not suffer from anxiety or feel obliged to exert himself. He is completely free from both egotism and ignorance.
I think he is also trigunateet, stands for a state beyond the three Gunas i.e Satva, Rajas and Tamas. Thus an Avdhoot transcends all the three which are the building blocks of the whole cosmic creation. This summarizes a little of the qualities of an Avdhoot. If you want to visualize and enjoy his state , please read the above mentioned text, Avdhoot Gita, written by Lord Dattateya and published by Advait Ashram, 5 Dehi Entally Road, Calcutta-700014.
Avdhoot Amritnath explained a technique for meditating on various chakras which is being given below. According to him,
Mooladhar is responsible for removing the waste material from our body. If this chakra remains impure whole of the body suffers. One should meditate on this chakra for 40 minutes(600 breaths). By one pointedness on this chakra one develops discrimination and confidence.
Swadhishthan chakra is responsible for removal of urine from our body. By continuously concentrating on it for 80(1200 breaths) minutes one can develop great power in ones body.
Manipur chakra takes care for whole of the body. This is the place where pran and apan meet together. Breath starts travelling upwards and reaches the top in Sahasrar. By concentrating here for 160 minutes(2400 breaths) one gets peace, anand, detachment, equanimity, indifference to the worldly materialistic pursuits.
Anahat Chakra guards the whole body. This is the dwelling place of Pran. By continuously concentrating on it for 320 minutes or 4800 breaths one is freed from greed, develops truthfulness, non-violence, compassion and forgiveness,
Agya chakra located between the two eye brows turns all the vrittis(thoughts) inwards. By concentrating on it for 200 minutes or 3000 breaths restlessness of mind disappears. One is able to see one’s whole body inside out in dhyan alone. Atam tattva becomes fixed.
Sahasrar chakra is located inside our brain and all kinds of knowledge arise from here only. Sadguru lives here. This place is also called Bhramar Gufa(cave of the bee).
An interesting part of his life was that he would many times go on his morning walks covering a distance of 153 kms in 24 hours eating only 2 chapatis and vegetable dish(of Kareel Spinach). I have read of only one special Indian tribe who could run for even 48 hours continuously and were super athletes. The Indian tribe was known as Tarahumara and lived in the COPPER CANYONS of Mexico. But I am not sure whether they ate like Avdhoot Amritnath. During one of his sadhans Amritanath ate as follows:
For 10 months he daily consumed 1 kg. of honey.
Next 02 months he consumed 1 kg of lemon juice daily.
Next 04 months every hour he took 1 kg. of milk, making it 24 kgs in a day.
This whole regimen seems to be very astonishing and fit to be shared though not advised to be followed in general. If you want to read about him more then please refer to the series; BHARAT KE MAHAN YOGI, volume: 9-10, page 265, available in Hindi only. This is a tribute to the avdhoot of Avdhoots, the Lord Shiva himself in this season of Shravan( monsoon) when all his bhaktas are busy in giving Abhisheks. Out of the many many slokas which one likes sloka 20 in chapter IV,(Pita ch mata……mayoaham) mentioned in the scripture says- I have no father, I have no mother, no family; I belong to no race. Never was I born and never shall I die. How can I say that I have affection or delusion? I am by nature blissful and free. Do drink the whole text and be blissful and free yourself and be an Avdhoot…..Jai Guru Dattatreay…………… .Bliss!Bliss! Bliss!...Om
