Tripura Gayatri Mantra Explanation


In tantra ten Mahavaidya concept is followed. Out of the ten Mahavidyas, Tripursundari is one of them. Each mahavidya has its own Gayatri mantra. Tripursundari Gayatri mantra which is also called Tripura Gayatri, is being explained below.

On being questioned by lord Vishnu, Ishwara extolled the importance and details of Tripura Gayatri mantra as below. One who has fallen because of his wrong deeds, one who is without the knowledge of Vedas and one who is Chandaal, they all can be redeemed and can receive Sat-Chit-Ananad knowledge of Brahm by knowing this gayatri mantra. This Gayatri is Chatushpadi i.e it has 24 tattva and is form of brahm itself. The details of its 24 letters is as follows:

“Tripura Sundaryaii Vidmahe, Kameshwaryai Dhimahi,
Tannah Klinne Pracho Dayaat.”

Tri: Yellow coloured like Champa, Brahma, Vishnu and shiva are its devta, is sitting in padasan on a hundred petalled lotus. Its devta is FIRE.

Pu:  It is blue in colour like the colour of flower of Alsi. Established in the middle of a lotus it is saumya in form and removes all up-pataks. Its devta is AIR.

R:    It is dark in colour and is always sitting on a lotus. It is serene and remover of all the mahapatak. Its devta is SUN.

Su:  It is of the colour of Neelmani and removes all the pains generated by planes and diseases. Its devta is ELECTRICITY.

Nd: It is of the colour of burning fire and removes the sin of killing of a child in the womb immediately. Its devta is YAM.

Aryaii: It is pure and removes the sin of brahm hatya. Its devta is VARUN.

Vi:  Its colour is like that of pure crystal. It removes all the sins of visiting places which one is not supposed to (agamyagaman). Its devta is JUPITER/Brihaspati.

Dma: It is also with colour of pure crystal. It removes all the sins accrued by eating all that which is prohibited. Its devta is PARJANYA.

He: It is the colour of a star. On its head is located the moon. It is beneficial for yogis and removes the sin generated due to brahmhatya. Its devta is INDRA.

Ka: It is dark in colour and its shine is like blue cloud. By meditating on it one gets free of various sins. Its devta is GANDHARVA.

Me: It is red in colour and sitting on a lotus. It immediately removes the sin accrued due to killing of a cow. Its devta is POOSHA.

Shva: It is of the colour of hot gold and knowers of mantra meditate on it sitting on alotus and it removes all the sins of any killings done. Its devta is SHIV.

Aryai:  It is white in colour like that of Kanti/Champa flower. It immediately burns the sin of killing of guru. Its devta is TVASHTA.

Dhi:  It is white in colour like a Kumud flower. By meditating on it one gets free of the sin of killing ones parents. Its devta is VASU.

Ma:  it is of the colour of Padmaraagmani and is extremely efflugent. It removes all the sins of previous life. Its devta is MARUT.

Hi:  It is like the colour of a conch and its kanti is like that of full moon. One should meditate on it every day, as it removes all the sins. Its devta is SOM.

Tat:  It is yellow in colour and located on a lotus. It removes the sin of accepting daan/offerings. Its devta is ANGIRA.

Nah:  It is red in colour like the flowers of Indragop or Veerbahooti. It removes the sins of any kind of killings. Its devta is VISHVADEV.

Klinn:  It isred in colour and is endowed with kanti like Vajra. It removes all the sins and meditator is protected from performing more sins. Its devta is ASHVADWAYA.

Ne:  It faces East direction. It is of the colour of rising sun. Meditating on it even once, one acquires the pedestal of Brahma. Its devta is PRAJAPATI.

Pra:  It is like the colour of neelkamal/blue lotus. By meditating on it even once, one acquires the pedestal of Vishnu. Its devta is SARVDEV.

Cho:  It is light yellow like the colour of Gorochan. By meditating on it even once, one acquires the state of Rudra. Its devta is RUDRA.

Da:  It is facing West and is like the colour of moon during winters. By meditating on it even once, one acquires the state of Ishwar. Its devta is BRAHMA.

Yaat:  It is called the head or top of the whole mantra. Its face is upwards. By meditating on it even once one acquires the state of Sadashiv.  Its devta is VISHNU.
