Awakening of Kundlini can take place in three ways;

1. First is with  help dry kriya shakti (क्रिय शक्ति) like asan (आसन), mudra (मुद्रा), bandh (बन्ध) as per Hatha Yoga. But this is a very lower form of awakening and considered jad or gross.With this awakening practitioner does not awaken himself. From here only vikriti arises which is known as a smaller Siddhi (सिद्धि) only. But real knowledge does not descend. This is a purely action oriented path or karm marg (कर्म मार्ग).

2. This is through pure knowledge or Gyan (ज्ञान). With the help of this practitioner arrives only at the state of ‘seer’ (दृष्टा). He does not get control over nature. This is known as Kaivalya (कैवल्य). This purely knowledge based path.

3. Both the above methods are not real Kundlini awakening. Real procedure a mix of both action and knowledge. With its help, Kaivalya (कैवल्य) of path of knowledge and siddhi/ (ऐश्वर्य)/ exaltation of Kriya path, both arise simultaneously. With this awakening Ishwar bhav (इश्वरभाव) rises slowly. This awakening is in fact a process of yog with Ishwar. Hence it can be termed as complete awakening of mahamilan (महामिलन).

One has to awaken knowledge and then one has awaken kriya. Then with the help of middle power both are to be connected, only then great meeting of the two powers happen. Real awakening is of pure satva. Not only power of chitt (चित्त) or power of achitt (अचित्त), but combination of both of them. Dry kriya or dry knowledge individually cannot help us attain anything. Thus proceeding from left or right path, we cannot attain the goal. One has to follow the middle path, where consciousness will be awakened. After pinnacle of Kriya (क्रिया) one attains Apar (अपर) dispassion, leading to natures dissolution. Through dry knowledge, one first attains vivek khyati/ विवेक् ख्याति (when impurities are completely removed and light of knowledge shines forth), then Par vairagya (dispassion), later Kaivalya/ कैव्लय (isolation of purusha from prakriti).

By joining of the both paths, bhog and moksha (मोक्ष) both are attained. This is known as exaltation (ऐश्वर्य). Fullness of this exaltation leads to Brhampath (ब्रह्मपथ). This s called Nirgun path.
